Health and Aging Brain Study - Health Disparities

The UNTHSC ITR is dedicated to understanding and eliminating health disparities in Alzheimer's disease among African Americans and Mexican Americans. The Health & Aging Brain Study - Health Disparities (HABS-HD) is the most comprehensive study of Alzheimer's among diverse communities ever conducted. Our team studies the biology of disease within the context of social, environmental and behavioral factors because “who you are”, “where you are from” and “your environment” are important to how you age.

The Health and Aging Brain Study-Health Disparities (HABS-HD) project seeks to understand the biological, social and environmental factors that impact brain aging among diverse communities. To date, the vast majority of research on the underlying risk factors and causes of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is based on non-Hispanic white participants. In order to be reflective of our community at large, research is needed to understand this devastating disease among everyone, given that AD (and other brain diseases) appear to impact communities differently.

African Americans and Hispanics will experience a significantly greater increased incidence of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and AD than non-Hispanic Whites. The Health and Aging Brain Study: Health Disparities project is highly significant as it simultaneously examines multiple pathways for MCI and AD risk among African Americans, Mexican Americans and non-Hispanic whites. Therefore, it will enable the identification of racial/ethnic-specific risk profiles for cognitive loss among diverse populations. Moreover, this is the first-ever large-scale study of Amyloid/Tau/Neurodegeneration pathological markers (and Framework) among a community-based, multi-ethnicity cohort. This sets the stage for a precision medicine model that takes race and ethnicity into account when advancing novel diagnostics and therapeutics for treating and preventing MCI and AD among diverse populations.
