Lakewood Residents,

This past week, road and pedestrian safety has been top of mind for many of us after the latest collision at the intersection of Madison and Hilliard involving an automobile and cyclist. In the Mayor's Corner article below, you can find what the City is doing to make this particular area safer for all travelers. We have heard your calls for more safety measures, and I assure you that our teams in the Planning and Public Works Departments are working to implement changes as quickly as possible.

The NHTSA designates every April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month in the U.S., and throughout the month we'll share posts on our social media channels to educate about the dangers and encourage residents to focus solely on driving.

Our popular Tree Giveaway Program is returning this month as well! Be sure to reserve your tree on Thursday, April 3.

Lastly, H2O's annual Breakfast with the Bunny is coming up in just a couple of weeks, so read below to learn how to reserve your spot!

Mayor's Corner: Traffic Safety at Madison and Hilliard

As many of you have heard, on the morning of Monday, March 24, 2025, a collision occurred at the intersection of Madison and Hilliard when a car struck a bicyclist with two children in an attached trailer. All of us are relieved and thankful that no one involved sustained severe injuries. The operator of the car was cited for Failure to Yield Right of Way and told officers that sun glare caused the driver to not see the cyclist.

This unfortunate incident serves as yet another reminder that drivers must be cautious and pay attention – especially in a dense, walkable city like Lakewood where so many get around on foot and cycle. Late last year, a pedestrian was killed near the same intersection in a felony vehicular homicide case, and many have naturally expressed concern as to how we can enhance safety for walkers and cyclists in the area. The City of Lakewood is focused on this effort and on making streets across our community as safe as possible.

The City of Lakewood consistently reviews data from traffic collisions to investigate any trends and determine if problem areas demand additional enforcement focus or possible infrastructure improvements. While the intersection of Madison and Hilliard does not rise to the top of the list of intersections where traffic collisions occur in Lakewood, the City believes that this area warrants addition focus given the two incidents that have occurred over the past six months.

As an initial measure, the City will be marking the four crosswalks that span Madison and Hilliard with high-visibility striping. Additionally, green paint will be placed in all bike lanes as they approach this intersection. Lane delineators will also be installed at key sections of bike lanes as they approach the intersection. These measures are designed to draw the attention of motorists to bicycle and pedestrian traffic and cause them to slow down and to more clearly separate modes of travel. The City will implement these measures as soon as weather conditions allow and materials/contractors are available.

The City also is retaining an outside engineering firm to perform further analysis on this intersection and provide any potential recommendations for additional safety measures. This firm will work with the Lakewood City Engineer, our Planning Department, and our safety forces to ensure that proposed measures make this location safer and do not give rise to unanticipated risk. Certain aspects of the intersection design/striping were mandated by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) when Hilliard was recently rebuilt through a County Public Works project. Now that this project is fully completed, the City has purview to update certain aspects of the intersection.

Even as the City works to explore policy and infrastructure, I also share the opinion of those city council members who believe that additional public education, awareness, and focus are critical. We need all travelers through Lakewood to avoid distraction and to observe all traffic rules including posted speed limits, lane assignments, proper yielding/recognition of right-of-way, and traffic signals. Above all, we must all work together to share our travel corridors with care so that everyone can arrive at their destination safely.

Public Works Updates

Interceptor Sites Completed on West Clifton

Interceptor Project work at two access shafts on West Clifton has been completed, and road striping and restoration is scheduled to be completed later this month.

The Lakewood Interceptor Rehabilitation Project is an effort to modernize the city's wastewater system to catch runoff and direct it to the Wastewater Treatment Facility, protecting Lake Erie and our nearby natural bodies of water. The original system was designed to allow some overflow during rare heavy rain or snow melt events; this project will bring the system into compliance with the federal Clean Water Act.

Sustainability Spotlight: Welcome, Earth Month!

April begins Earth Month with Earth Day falling on Tuesday, April 22. The first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970, as a day to raise awareness about air and water pollution. In December of that same year the Environmental Protection Agency was formed. The Clean Air Act was passed in 1970 followed by the Clean Water Act in 1972. Pollution directly impacts drinking water, air quality, soil quality, biodiversity, and overall health and wellbeing for humans and all living organisms. To reduce pollution, it is important we all work together to limit our impacts to support a healthy and thriving community. Below are some simple things you can do to reduce pollution.

  1. Never dump anything down a storm drain. Storm drains lead directly into Lake Erie or nearby rivers, meaning they do not go to the wastewater treatment plant for processing.
  2. Make sure the lids on your trash cans are secure so animals or the wind do not blow your trash around. Also bag your trash so it is less likely to fall out of your trash can.
  3. Be mindful of how much salt you use. Shovel first, salt if needed, and pick up any clumps of salt.
  4. Conduct routine maintenance checks on your vehicle to make sure it is not leaking gas, oil, or other fluids.
  5. Do not flush expired or unused medications down the toilet. Take them to a drug takeback program or to a local pharmacy drop off.
