February 2024 Issue

Note From Mayor George

Lakewood Residents,

I am pleased to present our February E-Newsletter that recaps some of the excitement in Lakewood from the past month and looks ahead to some future events planned for February.

First, our new and improved Refuse and Recycling Center opened on January 16 and has already received great feedback. I am thrilled that this project has now become a reality and want to thank all the members of the Refuse Department for their outstanding work in keeping our city clean.

You will also find highlights from our Skatepark public meeting; a visit to Winterhurst Ice Arena by the Cleveland Monsters; and some information on financial assistance that is available to income-qualified residents for home repairs and renovations.

Finally, the City of Lakewood is preparing to rejoin the Heritage Home Program of the Cleveland Restoration Society. This program provides owners of homes that are over 50 years old with access to low-cost, low-rate financing for home improvement and maintenance projects. We look forward to rolling this program out in the next few weeks.

Lakewood's New Refuse and Recycling Center Opens

The renovated and improved Refuse/Recycling Drop-Off Center officially opened to residents on January 16. Visitors can now use the west driveway to drop off refuse, mixed recycling, bulk trash, construction debris, electronics, motor oil, cardboard, and more.

Improvements to the building include a new check-in window that allows residents to stay in their vehicles upon arrival, a heated drive-through drop off area, and a revamped truck parking garage with updated break room, locker rooms, and offices for the Refuse Department staff.

The City held a ribbon cutting on January 24 to celebrate the occasion.

For more information on the refuse center, visit our Refuse and Recycling Page.

Public Meeting on the Future of Lakewood Park Skatepark

Last Tuesday evening, the City Departments of Planning/Development and Public Works - along with project design/build partner California Skateparks - welcomed members of the public to review the final concept plans for the Phase II addition to the Lakewood Skatepark.

The project is focused on completing the original vision for the skatepark with the addition of a bowl and other elements intended to support expanded use by all ages and abilities. We truly appreciate everyone who came out and provided comments and feedback, and we look forward to getting this project underway later this spring/summer!

Tips for Lithium Ion Batteries

Lithium ion batteries are found in many types of rechargeable devices such as smart phones, laptops, tablets, electric cars, toys, and e-bikes. Because these batteries store a large amount of power in a small amount of space, they can become dangerous if they are damaged or used improperly.

Pothole Season

It's winter in Northeast Ohio, and that means that pothole season is upon us once again. The City is working hard to repair affected areas as the weather permits. Unfortunately, repeated freeze and thaw cycles combined with wear from cars, trucks, and plows make the repair process difficult.

To read more about Lakewood's efforts to combat potholes, visit our website page below.

Report a Problem

If you would like to report a pothole, the best way to take action is to use the Report A Problem form located on the City of Lakewood's website.

In addition to potholes, this form can be used for reporting sidewalks obstructed by snow, refuse and recycling issues, park conditions, and many other options.

Report A Problem

Why Do Potholes Form?

Over time, cracks develop in asphalt roadways, and water is able to seep in and under the road surface. Once winter arrives, this water freezes and expands, pushing the surface up; once the water thaws and contracts, the road once again sinks down and becomes uneven and cracked.

Snow plows, cars, and trucks can further damage these expanded/contracted areas, leading to the formation of potholes.

Permanently repairing existing potholes requires the weather to be warm enough for a hot asphalt mixture to adhere properly. In the meantime, cold patch is added to minimize the harm done to vehicles.
