Landscaping & Maintenance
The Board recently performed a compliance drive. Courtesy notices went out for landscaping.
-
Weeds. And lots of them are showing up in our yards. If you received a notice, it was most likely categorized as "Mowing, Edging, Weeding." One or more of those items may be needed. Please review your yard and nuisance strips (the portion between the sidewalk and the street, including the river rock areas) to see what needs to be addressed. If you need more explanation, please contact the office. I am happy to help.
-
Flowerbeds. Have they been cleared of grass and weeds? How are the borders looking? If your border is not mortared, please make sure they look neat and tidy. If they are mortared, please make sure they are free of cracks.
-
Missing trash cans or extra trash cans -- by now, if you still have an extra can or are missing your can, you should contact the City of Hutto's Utility Department to discuss a solution.
- Do your fences need stain? Emory Crossing's fence stain is: Wood Defender 200 Series Semi-Transparent Sierra. If the worn stain is due to irrigation, considering adjusting the heads to help prevent yearly maintenance of stain.
- How is your stucco and siding handling the elements? Sometimes it needs some attention due to flaking or faded paint.
If you need some tips for landscaping maintenance, check out the landscaping eBlast from the Fall. Next month, we will have a Landscape Seminar, too. Check out the details below.

Organic Treatments
Don't like pesticides or harsh chemicals? Search for organic ways to help your lawn.
- Pulling weeds is the most effective way to get rid of them.
- Topsoil and compost are a great lawn food. A strong lawn can outcompete most weeds.
- Core or liquid aeration helps create more pore space. This allows your irrigation and rain to go further into the ground, which helps the root system grow stronger.
- Plant natives! Look at the City's UDC plant list.
- Mulch your trees if they are between 1-2 years old.
- Also mulch your flowerbeds. Mulch helps with water conservation.
- Water trees deeply instead of a little at a time. This helps the root system go further into the ground.
- Ants can be treated using hot water. This will effect the grass around the ant bed. Another treatment is cornmeal. Do not disturb the bed. Sprinkle cornmeal on top. The ants take it into the bed, consume it, and die. These methods are usually effective, but please monitor the progress.
Can't or don't want to pull weeds? Check out this weed killer recipe below. While this recipe isn't full proof, it can help tame weeds. Regular applications are needed. This *will* kill things other than weeds, so apply with caution.
1 gallon of white vinegar. (higher the acidity the better)
1 cup of Epsom salt
1 tablespoon of liquid Dawn soap
Mix and put in spray bottle. Spray weeds regularly.

Nature Play Playground
The Board is working towards more nature-based play elements to the playground area. Boulders have been added. Their placement is not final. Other elements will be added soon.
Here's what the National Wildlife Federation says about Nature Play:
- The Boulders offer diverse opportunities for imaginative play, social, physical, and constructive play. They can serve as mountains, islands, or foundations for sandcastles encouraging children to build, dig, and create their own worlds.
-
Seating: They are a great way for children who don’t want to be sitting in the sand to still participate in the area. Parents/caregivers can also sit in the area. (pending Boulder sizes)
- Sensory: They provide sensory exploration with the varied textures (rough, smooth, cool, warm, etc.) for children to explore. Nature Connections to their surroundings.
- Children develop their own sense of care, concern, and safety when they climb on the boulders. (teaching themselves about the materials)
- Dramatic Play: The Boulders can be used as props or landmarks in children’s stories.
- Physical & Gross Motor Skill Development: Climbing, and balance & coordination & digging
- Collaboration & Cooperation: children might work together to “bury” the boulder or dig around the boulder to the bottom of it, which fosters teamwork and social skills. Children tend to play together and converse with each other what they are doing and what they are pretending.
- Spatial Awareness: It helps children develop their spatial awareness as they navigate around the space and build structures

This event will be packed with important information on how to care for your landscaping. As an added bonus, we will be doing another Plant Bar. The bar will begin after the presentation and Q&A. So, bring your questions! We can't wait to see everyone.
The Plant Bar is first come, first serve. We will not open the bar before the Q&A session has been completed. We request one plant per person so as many residents can enjoy the event.
| |
The presentation is about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how many questions are asked. This event is geared towards adults, however kids are always welcome.

Snake Seminar
This is a kid-friendly event. Learn about coexisting with snakes and what to do if you encounter one. Living along a creek means we will always have wildlife in our neighborhood.
Details will be announced as soon as they are confirmed.

Reminders:
Compliance drives are every other week. Trash cans in view and excessive weeds are the main concerns.
Trail Walks - If you are interested in joining a trail walk, please email or call the office. You do not have to do the entire walk, which is about 2 miles. Walks are typically first thing in the morning on Tuesdays. However, I am happy to work with your schedule if I can.
Dog stations are numbered. Report problems to the office so they can be addressed ASAP. Please, pick up after your dog. The Association does not have a "Pooper Scooper" service. There are 10 stations along the trail and at the Amenity Center. Bags are provided, but you should always carry your own. Leaving scat behind is against the City of Hutto's stormwater management plan.
The Amenity Center is a private parking lot with use being allowed while you are actively using the amenities. No overnight or day parking is allowed.
Do not park in Alleyways at any time.
| | Trash cans may only be out on your trash day (M or T). This is also a city ordinance, as well as in our Documents. | | |
At Emory Crossing, assessments are billed quarterly.
The Q2 Assessment will post on April 1st, 2025.
