Lakewood Residents,
Another successful "Meet The Trucks" this past weekend kicked off the city's robust lineup of summer events! This June edition of the Community Newsletter lists all the goings-on for the month along with information on Lakewood's marquee event of the season, the Fourth of July.
The new 30 MPH speed limit on Lake Avenue is now in effect. This speed limit reduction and the recently presented layout proposals on Bunts Road serve as early examples of changes instituted in the City's new Active Transportation Plan, "Safe Streets For Lakewood."
Lastly, there's a long lineup of activities taking place at the Cove Community Center, so be sure to check out all that is going on for everyone including babies, toddlers, teens, parents and parents-to-be, and seniors!

Reminder: Lake Avenue Speed Limit Change June 3
The Lake Avenue speed limit change from 35 mph to 30 mph went into effect June 3, 2024. Please be aware of the new speed limit when traveling this route.

Summer Recreation Season in Full Swing | |

Beat the heat this summer at Lakewood's Foster Pool and Becks Pool, and the Lakewood Park Splash Pad!
The Splash Pad opened to the public the weekend of June 1, and Becks Pool (located at Madison Park) opened June 4. Foster Pool, located at Lakewood Park, is scheduled to open June 11.

Fourth of July Parade Applications
Applications for the 2024 Fourth of July Parade are now available. The parade will take place Thursday, July 4 at 10:00 AM on Lake Avenue between Kenneth Ave. and Lakewood Park.

Rep. Mike Skindell to Serve as Parade Grand Marshal | |
|
State Representative Mike Skindell has been announced as the 2024 Fourth of July Parade Grand Marshal.
Rep. Skindell served as a Lakewood Councilman-at-Large from 1998 to 2002, during which he presided as Council's Rules and Ordinances Committee chairman and served on the Finance, Housing, and Public Works Committees.
Rep. Skindell has been a member of the Ohio House of Representatives in District 13 from 2002 to 2010, and again from 2018 to present. He also represented Ohio Senate District 23 from 2010 to 2018.

Fourth of July Lakewood Park Rules

For safety purposes, there will be no parking permitted in the Lakewood Park Parking Lot after 5:00 PM. All vehicles in the lot must be moved by 5:00 PM or could be subject to towing.
- The fireworks discharge area includes Kiwanis Club Pavilion and Kids’ Cove playground areas, meaning that they will be closed during the entire holiday.
- All generators, propane and gas-fueled grills are prohibited.
- All tents, shelters, and beach umbrellas are prohibited.
- Police may conduct searches of bags and containers for reasons of public safety.
- No alcoholic beverages are permitted at any time throughout the year.
- No personal fireworks. This includes novelty fireworks like sparklers and smoke bombs.
- No dogs or pets of any kind will be permitted in the park on July 4th.
- The skate park, tennis courts, and basketball courts are expected to close at 7:00 PM, but may close earlier.

Bunts Road Rehabilitation Project | |

On May 7, the Lakewood City Engineer and Planning team presented the proposed improvements to Bunts Road.

Safe Streets For All: Lakewood's Active Transportation Plan | |

On April 15, 2024, the City's new Active Transportation Plan entitled "Safe Streets for Lakewood" was presented by the Administration and passed by City Council. This plan is the result of a collaborative effort involving city officials, community organizations, and residents, all working together to create a more pedestrian and bike-friendly Lakewood.
At its core, the plan promotes active transportation as a safe, convenient, and sustainable mode of travel. Community engagement has been key, with residents providing valuable input throughout the process. Your voices have shaped the plan’s recommendations to ensure they meet the needs of our diverse community.
Highlights include increasing the number of on-street and buffered bike lanes, shared use paths, crossing improvements, and traffic calming measures. Additionally, the plan prioritizes creating barrier-free and inclusive streets, ensuring accessibility for residents of all ages and ability levels.
As the City implements more of the Plan’s recommendations, your continued engagement is vital. You can make your voice heard at community project meetings, council and commission meetings, and through public surveys. Together, Lakewood can create a more walkable, bikeable, and inclusive city.

Human Services Teams Up to Aid Seniors | |

On May 15, the Department of Human Services and Lakewood Ohio Division of Aging, alongside neighborhood paramedics and police officers, and LakewoodAlive, met with senior residents at Lake Shore Towers to share valuable information and resources.
Sponsored by the Healthy Lakewood Foundation (HLF), this initiative aims to inform seniors in apartment buildings about available services.
Senior residents living in multi-unit dwellings who are interested in scheduling a visit can contact the Department of Human Services at (216) 529-6687 to arrange a meeting.

The Cove Garden Club (CGC) had a fantastic afternoon! We learned, got our hands dirty with compost, and kicked off planting season with our first veggies.

H2O – Help to Others Summer Service Camp
H2O is getting ready to launch Summer Service Camp 2024 and still has a few spots available! We have so many wonderful volunteer and learning experiences planned and can’t wait to work with campers again.

One of the annual projects, the H2O Clothing Drive and Super Sale, will collect donations soon at all three fire stations and Cove Community Center. The sale will be Saturday, July 20. The collection bins can also be used to donate new or gently used school supplies that will be shared with Supplies4Success and eventually given to Lakewood students.

Division of Aging
The Bucket Wish Program: Fulfilling Dreams for Lakewood Seniors
The Lakewood Division of Aging has received a $5,000 grant from the Healthy Lakewood Foundation to support the Bucket Wish program. This initiative helps seniors achieve long-held dreams they couldn’t fulfill on their own.
What is the Bucket Wish Program?
Seniors currently involved in activities at Cove can apply for up to $500 to realize a cherished wish, funded by the Healthy Lakewood Foundation’s Bucket List Fulfillment Grant. The program brings joy and fulfillment by making dreams a reality.
“The Bucket Wish program makes dreams real for Lakewood's seniors, all thanks to the Healthy Lakewood Foundation and Division of Aging staff. We're bringing joy and fulfillment by granting cherished wishes, leaving a lasting impact on our community,” shares Susan Hijjawi, Manager of Senior Services at the Division of Aging.

Bocce! Bocce! at Cove
Our nighttime Bocce league is packed with 16 teams (64 players!) every Wednesday from June 5 to July 31, starting at 5:30 PM. Spectators are welcome to join the fun!
We also have openings for our daytime league on Thursdays from June 6 to August 1, with games beginning at 12:30 PM. Come and join us!
