Lakewood Residents,

Last week, I was proud to be on hand as the Division of Animal Control officially cut the ribbon at the brand-new Animal Shelter. The new building will allow our Animal Control team to serve the city better than ever, and I want to thank all of our partners that helped to make this project a reality.

We are in need of volunteers to serve on Lakewood’s boards and commissions, which play essential roles in shaping our city’s future and guiding important decisions. These positions are a great way to get involved, share your expertise, and make sure that your voice and the voices of your neighbors are heard by our elected officials. One of my favorite events of the year is Lakewood's annual Veterans Day ceremony at Lakewood Park, where the community comes together to honor all those that have served in the military. This year's ceremony will be held Tuesday, November 11 at 11:00 AM. I'm honored to take part, and hope to see you there.

New Animal Shelter Hosts Ribbon Cutting and Open House

On October 24, City officials, members of LASWAB and CCLAS, and Lakewood residents came together at the brand-new Animal Shelter located at 12910 Berea Road. Visitors were able to tour the building, talk with Animal Control team members, and celebrate the official ribbon cutting.

The Division of Animal Control moved from the previous location on Valley Parkway near the Wastewater Treatment Plant during the week of October 27. The new and improved facility will allow for more convenient service for residents, more room for pets and animals, and will also allow the expansion of the Wastewater Treatment Plant as a part of the City's consent decree with the Ohio EPA.

Lakewood To Honor Veterans at Annual Ceremony Nov. 11

The City of Lakewood’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony will take place Tuesday, 

November 11, 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Veterans Memorial in Lakewood Park, 14532 Lake Avenue. The ceremony is open to the public and pays tribute to the men and women who have served our country in the armed forces.

The ceremony will begin with the National Anthem performed by the Wild Pitch Quartet, followed by an invocation given by David Stack of CWV Post 579 and opening remarks by Mayor Meghan F. George.

This year’s keynote speaker is Retired Colonel Zoltan “Z” Krompecher. Colonel Zoltan is a native of Athens, Ohio and enlisted in the Army in 1985 as a Cannon Crewman (13B) and was stationed in Bad Kissingen, Germany with the 2/41 Field Artillery. After his assignment to Germany, he graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC) and served on an Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA). Upon graduating from Ohio University with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, Colonel “Z” was commissioned into the Military Intelligence branch. He holds Master’s Degrees from Michigan State University (English) and the Air War College. His previous assignments include: Korea; the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault); West Point (English); Fort Huachuca; Fort Gordon; Fort Leavenworth; Western Michigan University; 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne); 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne); Battalion Command at Fort Sam Houston; Pentagon (DAG2). He finished his career in 2023 as an advisor and later Inspector General l for the South Carolina National Guard. He served with Special Operations Task Forces (1-21 and 5-35) in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Other highlights of this year’s Veterans Day program include performances by the Lakewood High School Band and a 21-gun salute by the Joint Veterans Honor Guard. Following the ceremony, coffee and doughnuts will be offered in the Woman’s Club Pavilion at Lakewood Park.

Fall Leaf Collection Begins Nov. 3

The City of Lakewood will begin collecting loose leaves from tree lawns on Monday, November 3, 2025, and will continue through Friday, December 19, 2025, weather permitting. Please place your leaves on the tree lawn/curb area, no farther than 6 ft. away from the edge of the street.

Leaves can also be placed in paper yard/leaf bags (no plastic bags) and set out on your regular refuse and recycling collection day.

City Of Lakewood Seeks Volunteers To Fill Upcoming Board and Commission Vacancies

The City of Lakewood is seeking applicants for openings on the following boards/commissions:

• Citizens Advisory Committee
• Architectural Board of Review (ABR)
• Board of Zoning Appeals
• Community Relations Advisory Commission
• Complete and Active Streets Education and Advisory Board
• Animal Safety and Welfare Advisory Board (LASWAB)

Halloween Safety Tips From The Lakewood PD

Trick-or-treating in Lakewood is on Friday, October 31 from 6 PM to 8 PM. Lakewood's Neighborhood Officers (with a little help from the Fire Department) have a few tips on keeping everybody safe this year.
