Note From Principal Atkins
Families,
Happy Friday! Please make sure your calendars are marked with the above dates. Next Friday is an Early Release day followed by two days off!
There is some important information in today's newsletter, be sure to continue reading through for information on:
- the mask mandate - it will stop being enforced in schools starting February 28th
- an excellent opportunity to join a CSA that benefits others (and gets you great, fresh produce!)
- Cupid Grams
- Summer Connections ("Summer School")
- & much more!
While the mask mandate is ending in Denver, we are strongly recommending that families continue to send their students in a mask. We know this has prevented the spread of many illnesses here at Stedman, and we also know that Covid is still a threat to some of our vulnerable family and friends. We are so proud of how well our young ones have done learning and playing with masks on these past few years. We always learn from them and their resilience and grit, don't we?
You also received communication from DPS that schools are no longer sending home Covid notifications for the school or classrooms. Notifications will now only be sent home if your child is required to quarantine.
Next week, our 3rd-5th Graders will be taking their Spring District Interims (assessments) in literacy and math. We look forward to improving on our already terrific growth. We're so proud of our students, stay tuned for our February data! Did you know that during the Fall Interims, our students:
- beat the District average in 3rd Grade Math by 28.5%?
- beat the District average in 3rd Grade Literacy by 9.8%?
- beat the District average in 4th Grade Math by 20.2%?
- beat the District average in 4th Grade Literacy by 22%?
- beat the District average in 5th Grade Literacy by 6.2%?
Families of 5th Graders - PLEASE complete your application for middle school by Tuesday. This is extremely important so that your child has the best chance of attending a school you desire. Learn more about how to complete Choice and what your options are in our area here.
Next week is a great opportunity to support your Stedman PTA by dining at Illegal Pete's in Park Hill for this month's Restaurant Night. They will be donating 50% of their sales back to our school if you dine in or take out between 5-8pm on February 16th (online orders don't count). Spread the word to your local friends and family!
We continue to celebrate Black History Month here at Stedman and are excited for some activities planned next week! In lieu of our annual Black History Month performance, we'll be sharing a community video at the end of the month featuring many of our students. Stay tuned! If you haven't had a chance to check out the email I sent earlier, be sure to check it out here as it's filled with excellent Black History Month Resources.

Nota del Sr. Atkins
Familias
¡Feliz viernes!

Mask Update from the Superintendent
Sent Wednesday, February 9th:
Today, the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment announced that the public health order requiring masks in schools will expire at the end of the day on Friday, Feb. 25. Masks are still required in all indoor school settings until that date. The decision by DDPHE means that, beginning Monday, Feb. 28, masks will no longer be required but will be strongly recommended for all students, staff, and visitors across DPS.
Throughout the pandemic, DPS has worked closely with our state and local health partners, including DDPHE and Denver Health. Our COVID-19 plan and procedures continue to be guided by their medical and public health expertise. Our health partners made this decision based on high rates of immunity and lower rates of severe disease. We have a very high vaccination rate in our community; about 80% of Denver residents ages 5 and older are vaccinated. DPS also is in full compliance, across all schools and worksites, with the city’s vaccine mandate.
“Coming out of Omicron, we’re now at a different phase of the pandemic,” said Dr. Steven Federico, Director of Pediatrics for Denver Health and our close partner on our COVID response team. “The focus moving forward needs to be on vaccination—including boosters for teens and adults, as well staying home and getting tested when we’re sick. The lifting of this mandate does not mean that individuals should not or cannot mask.”
I am so tremendously grateful to the entire DPS community for coming together during the pandemic to follow the guidelines set forth by our health agencies and to do our best to adapt to changes, always while helping to ensure the healthiest conditions in our buildings for our scholars, our educators, and each other. If you or your family members have not yet been vaccinated or boosted, please do so as soon as possible, as it remains the best way to protect our children, families, and neighbors.
We will continue to work closely with our health partners, and we will remain flexible and diligent as the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve.
There are ongoing discussions between public officials and the state about changes to quarantine and reporting as rates decline. And we will also be providing updated health and safety guidance in the coming days for meetings, Central Support sites, and athletic and other school events.
Thank you again for your patience and perseverance as we continue to support our scholars, schools, and each other.
In collaboration,
Dr. Alex Marrero
Superintendent, Denver Public Schools

INCLUSION CORNER
This week we'd like to highlight the Lunar New Year!
Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, is an important festival in many Asian countries, and Lunar New Year celebrations are being held more and more in Western cities in recent years too.
Lunar New Year is the festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. It was traditionally a time to honor deities as well as ancestors, and it has also become a time to feast and visit family members.
The Chinese base their New Year celebration on the lunar calendar instead of the solar one used in the West. Therefore, people who follow the solar calendar always celebrate the New Year on January 1st, but the Lunar New Year will depend on the moon. Usually, it is celebrated in February, yet the exact day will vary from year to ear. This year just happened to be on Feb. 1, 2022.

COVID Vaccines for Ages 5+
Children age 5 years and older can get a COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccines are the strongest layer of protection we can offer children against COVID-19. This fall, COVID-19 rates have been higher in school-aged children than adults. While fewer children get severely ill with COVID-19 than adults, they still can get sick with the virus and spread it to other people. Some get sick enough to need hospitalization. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine can help your child stay healthy, keep them in school, and protect your family and community.
Click HERE to learn more and find locations or upcoming vaccine clinics.

CDPHE recently announced the Rapid-At-Home program in which they will ship free rapid antigen tests directly to homes. Students, families, and educators can enroll in the program here. A couple of important notes on the program:
- Due to significant interest, there appears to be several week delay in initial shipments after signing up.
-
These rapid tests are intended for ongoing screening; a rapid test cannot clear an individual with symptoms to go to school or clear someone from quarantine. Individuals can only be cleared with a PCR test at COVIDCheckColorado or your primary care physician.
**

Interested in Volunteering?
(From DPS: On August 2, Mayor Hancock announced a new public health order mandating that all employees,
volunteers, contractors, and others at DPS be vaccinated against COVID-19. Anyone who volunteers in a DPS school is required to go through our volunteer application and background check process with Volunteer Services.
This process will now include a requirement to
