CLIMATE HEALTH NOW
November 2021 Community Newsletter
|
|
Climate Health Now is a group of doctors, nurses, and health professionals in California who recognize climate change as the public health and equity emergency of our lifetimes.
We organize and mobilize the trusted voice of health professionals to advocate for a rapid, just transition off harmful fossil fuels toward a healthy, equitable society sustained by renewable energy.

A few weeks ago Hilary Ong reached out asking if any CHN members would want to teach an interactive class to high school students in Oakland about climate change and health. Karly Hampshire, a medical student at UCSF and co-director and founder of Planetary Health Report Card stepped up! Here she shares some of her tips for what made the class a success. Thank you Karly!
- Keep it simple: put an outline on the board.
- Ask participants: share one word regarding climate change
- Share your own personal journey (story of self!)
- Focus on equity
- Focus on solutions
-
Venn diagram from Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson (see above and here)
- Brainstorm possible partnerships

New CHN member Reshma Shah is - among many other things - a cookbook author! Nourish focuses on plant-based nutrition for families.

Support the VISION coalition --
Demand 1 Km Setbacks from Oil and Gas Drilling
|
|
The time is NOW for us to tell CalGEM that we support setbacks from oil and gas drilling and where Californians live, go to school, play, and seek medical care. If you haven't already, please take a minute to submit your public comment here -- VISION will be sending each comment submitted via this page to the state. If helpful, here is a draft email you can use to share this petition with friends, family, and colleagues in California.
The two public hearings will be Wednesday, December 1 at 5 pm and Thursday, December 9 at 6 pm. VISION has asked that as many people as possible register to speak in favor of setbacks. It is especially powerful for us to speak as health professionals. You can register to give public comments here. If it's helpful, here is a quick review of the health harms of oil and gas drilling.
Physicians for Social Responsibility - Los Angeles and SF-Physicians for Social Responsibility are holding a state-wide meeting for health professionals to learn how we can support VISION on November 30th from 6:30-7:30 pm. You can register for that here.
