Note From Principal Atkins
Stedman Families,
It has been a FULL week here at Stedman with field trips, performances, visitors, and classroom parties! It brings me joy to see so much joy being spread in our community.
We have a lot of updates and information for you as we head into the long Winter Break. Please be sure to read through my note here but continue to scroll through the entire newsletter so you don't miss anything.
First off, we know that the winter break can be difficult for many families - if you are in need of resources during this time, please scroll down for several events and organizations providing food, clothing, and more. I also want to shout out our PTA, Montview Presbyterian Church, and the Urban League Guild of Denver who supported many of our families in special ways this season. We hope our families feel loved and cared for by these partnerships and supports.
SchoolChoice opens on January 13th which means that families entering ECE3, ECE4, Kindergarten, Middle School, or High School will be entering this process. Please reach out to Ali Larson if you have any questions about how to participate. All selections MUST be in by February 14th at 4pm.
- For your friends or neighbors interested in learning more about Stedman, please send them to our website - we also have an Open House and tours happening through Round 1 (see below).
- For our 5th Grade families looking at Middle Schools, we have a lot of information for you on this page of our website. At the bottom of the page, our Spanish Immersion families will find information on middle school options that will support their Spanish language journey. Please be sure to check it out!
- Stedman Families received an email earlier this week that we had to make the difficult decision to reduce the classroom offerings in our ECE program. Please read more in the announcement from VAC here
The 3rd Grade Performance of Crazy Carols was a HIT, shout out to Mr. Moore for entertaining our families and putting so many smiles on the faces of our students and families.
And another shout out to our Stedman Basketball team who continues their winning streak by beating Green Valley Elementary this week. They are now 4-0!
I have included a video below that explains how modern report cards can be interpreted. They certainly look a lot different than when we were children, so I know they can be confusing for many families. Please take a few minutes to check out the video and reach out to your child's teacher if you have any further questions.
I hope everyone is able to get some rest this holiday season. I know we all deserve it. I'm thankful for each and every one of you, and I hope you enjoy your break. Please remember that we do not return until Thursday, January 5th.

Shout out to our 2nd Grade team for taking their students to Cleo Parker Robinson this past week to enjoy a showcase from Granny Dances. They took the RTD and had a great experience learning and having fun together!

The Stedman Staff/Faculty is excited to engage everyone in exploring new ways to view learning outcomes for our students. It is called a Growth mindset.
Growth mindset describes a way of viewing challenges and setbacks. People who have a growth mindset believe that even if they struggle with certain skills, their abilities aren’t set in stone. They think that with work, their skills can improve over time. Report cards are approaching and grading will reflect the idea that learning, and skillsets are growing and should not be grounded in A, B, C, D, F grading system. Instead, we want share with you your learners growth and current skill levels.
When reviewing report cards with your student, please consider the power you hold in shaping how they view themselves as a learner.
Here are a few ways you can frame your responses to help develop a mindset in your student that they are constantly growing and have potential, regardless of what score they received:

Girls Basketball Outing
The YMCA Girls Team from Stedman got a chance to attend the DU Women's basketball game this week! They even got a chance to go courtside and say hi to the players!
