Happy Friday! We enjoyed a terrific week here at Stedman with some of us enjoying field trips, all of us enjoying learning, and our basketball team moving to 6-0. We're so proud of our students!
Please read through this entire newsletter so that you don't miss any important or helpful information or resources.
This week, our classrooms talked about Curiosity in PATHS work - if you are able to reiterate some of these ideas at home, that would be great. Curiosity is the desire to learn or explore something new and/or taking an active interest in learning. How can you discuss or reinforce curious attitudes at home? Next week, we'll be looking at Self-Awareness!
I hope you are able to celebrate or honor the legacy of Dr. King in some way this weekend. I look forward to seeing everyone back here on Tuesday.

ACCESS TESTING
Beginning on January 9th, Multilingual Learners (MLLs) in grades K-5 will participate in the ACCESS for ELLs state assessment. This assessment measures a student’s English language skills in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. ACCESS is used by classroom teachers to determine the level of language support that a student may need during instruction. With this information, we are able to monitor student progress on an annual basis and determine when a student is ready to be placed in mainstream instruction.
Stedman will be administering the assessment on the following day(s)
- Week 1: January 9, 10, 11
- Week 2: January 17-18
- Week 3: January 23-24
Students best demonstrate what they know after getting plenty of sleep the night before testing and eating a healthy breakfast in the morning. To keep your child from missing instruction due to makeup testing, ensure that they arrive on-time for school and that appointments and vacations are planned for non-testing days.
Your support during ACCESS is appreciated as state assessments are vital tools that contribute towards student success.

SchoolChoice opens on January 13th which means that families entering ECE3, ECE4, Kindergarten, Middle School, or High School will be entering this process. Please reach out to Ali Larson if you have any questions about how to participate. All selections MUST be in by February 14th at 4pm.

Every January we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He is remembered as a civil rights activist who committed his life to racial justice. While it is easy to simplify or downplay his message for mass consumption, we know that he called for drastic changes to bring equality to America. We hope to be living out his dream here at Stedman and giving our students the tools and critical thinking skills to be a part of that change: there is still much work to be done. Below are some resources that might be helpful for your family as you dig deeper into his work and message.

Park Hill Neighbors for Equity in Education (PHNEE.org) needs your feedback! Our monthly, virtual community engagement session, EdEquity Corner, began during the pandemic. We found the meetings to be a good, safe way to connect with neighbors.
