Note From Principal Atkins
Stedman Families,
Though the week was short for students, they certainly managed to accomplish a lot! And while students are off today, your Stedman staff is hard at work digging into professional development including sessions on inclusive language and curriculum in classrooms, trauma-informed practices, and much more.
We are nearing Thanksgiving, and I continue to be grateful for this community in so many ways. We are indeed a special place, and I am grateful for the way that we each play a role in supporting the students of Stedman.
For our 5th Grade families, please be sure to read the email that came out earlier this week with information on SchoolChoice and options for Middle School. We also begin hosting tours next week if you have friends or neighbors interested in coming to check out our incredible school.
For families with younger children, our VAC committee recently emailed you sharing the incredibly difficult decision decision to close our ECE program after this school year concludes. While these decisions are made out of necessity, we know that they impact people, and we don't take that lightly, and we will continue to support our staff and families impacted by this change. On a personal note, I hope our community knows how incredibly grateful we are for the many years of dedication Mrs. Isabel has given Stedman. She is an incredible educator and loves all of our children tremendously.
We look forward to hosting the Book Fair next week and hope you read more about how to participate below. Our PTA is invaluable for taking on this enormous feat each year. Shout out to everyone that is volunteering to make this happen.
Be sure to catch up on everything by reading through our entire newsletter below. I hope everyone has a great weekend.
Sincerely,

Special Note About This Year's Book Fair
It's that time of year! Our annual book fair is upon us, and we know it's one of the student's favorite events at school. This year, however, we know that the company we have historically used has made some poor choices in order to continue serving schools across the country. Scholastic announced that they would allow schools the option of "opting out" of Diverse Voices. (As you know, we always order extra books from authors of color and books in the Spanish language and of course opted in this year). Making the exposure and access to different voices and experiences a choice, certainly did not sit well with us. While we are uncomfortable with their decision to allow schools to opt out, we have had the Fair scheduled for nearly a year and decided to continue supporting authors of color by not canceling and allowing our students a chance to purchase their books. We are in the process of looking at different opportunities for future Book Fairs.
One benefit to using Scholastic has always been our ability to purchase free books for students and our class libraries. We will continue to use the funds raised to support a free book for every student, and we will make sure these books come from the "diverse voices" collection. Scholastic is the world's largest publisher and distributor of children's books, so we want to acknowledge that many authors of color are published and distributed by Scholastic. We also do not want to impact these authors by canceling the Fair. Thank you for your understanding, and we hope to see you at the Fair this week!

NOVEMBER IS NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
National Native American Heritage Month is celebrated each year in November. It is a time to celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities and ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation. This November and every month, we celebrate the culture and heritage of these remarkable Americans who deeply enrich the quality and character of our Nation. We celebrate Indian Country with its remarkable diversity of Indigenous and Alaska Native cultures and peoples.

Several years ago, we collaborated on a Land Acknowledgement for the Stedman website. Did you know that if you text 907-312-5085 with your zip code, you will receive a response with the Indigenous lands you are on? In the area of 80207 -where Stedman is- you are on Arapaho, Cheyenne, Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute), and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ land. More info: land.codeforanchorage.org.
