Wolverine Pipe Line Company (Wolverine) would like to recognize a stakeholder for taking the steps to be a good neighbor and report signs of a potential release on its underground pipeline which carries refined petroleum products.

The resident, Charles Mikels, has lived in his local community for many years, walking the same bike path with his wife and dog daily, until one afternoon, he observed something not quite right. “I noticed the aroma in the air, and knew it wasn’t normal; when I saw Wolverine’s pipeline marker, and potential product on the ground, I knew that it was time to shorten my daily walk and head home to make a call.”

Mikels recalls receiving Wolverine’s public awareness mailing each year, in which signs of a release are highlighted for residents living near its pipeline. The mailing also includes a handy fridge magnet with contact information for Wolverine’s Operations Control Center in the event of an emergency.

“Charles did exactly what we ask nearby landowners to do every year when we mail them a brochure, letter and magnet,” said Edwin Peters, Right of Way and Claims Supervisor at Wolverine. “He used sight, sound, and smell to be aware of his surroundings, and reported it to our emergency number that is clearly displayed on our materials. We’d like to recognize him for doing the right thing and being a good neighbor by preserving the public safety of the neighborhood.”

Mikels has a message to share with folks who may not be aware of the signs of a release on an underground pipeline, “If you see, smell, or hear anything, call it in. I also encourage people to read the letters they get from utility companies in their area, and to keep the handy fridge magnets for quick access to emergency contact information.” Read more

In 2024, Wolverine participated in 19 in-person Paradigm Liaison Meetings!

Wolverine Pipe Line Company just wrapped up sponsorship and participation in the 2024 Paradigm Liaison Program meetings throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. These meetings took place in counties where Wolverine operates its ~700-mile pipeline system which transports gasoline and diesel fuel.

Paradigm is an educational program that takes place across the nation to engage local contractors, excavators, public officials and emergency responders in a public safety and public awareness training related to pipelines. Pipeline operators are encouraged to participate in the regions where their pipeline exists so that meaningful relationships can be built with the attendees.

This year, Wolverine participated in a total of 19 Paradigm Liaison meetings. The meetings provided a great opportunity for Wolverine personnel to meet face-to-face and establish connections with Paradigm attendees. In total, 1,692 stakeholders attended Paradigm this year in the communities in which Wolverine operates. A breakdown of attendance by state is provided below:

  • Illinois - 4 Meetings, 694 Total Attendees
  • Indiana - 6 Meetings, 679 Total Attendees
  • Michigan - 9 Meetings, 542 Total Attendees

Wolverine’s participation in the 2024 Paradigm Liaison Program yielded significant outreach that supplements our regulatory compliance requirements. These meetings also proved beneficial and effective towards our continued efforts of increasing public awareness of our pipeline system's location and aspects with community partners and building strong relationships.

PIPE Program

Wolverine's community outreach program is called the Partners in Pipeline Education or PIPE. Through the PIPE Program, we make personal connections to the local Fire Departments, Police Departments, Emergency Management Personnel, Government Officials and other stakeholders with whom we work with for normal operation and maintenance activities and in case of an actual emergency. We are currently scheduling virtual and in-person PIPE Presentations for the remaining calendar year. If interested in participating in this program, click here to contact Chelsea Yi.
