This summer, Wolverine Pipe Line Company (Wolverine) has held two boom deployment exercises, one in Marshall, MI, and one in Niles, MI, showcasing its commitment to emergency preparedness. These exercises involved key participation from local agencies including the Buchanan Township Fire Department, Berrien County Sheriff, and Berrien County Emergency Management.

Chris Burks of the Buchanan Township Fire Department shared, “Exercises like these are crucial for our department because they enhance the readiness of our personnel in any real-life emergency situations. Through hands-on drills like these, emergency responders can refine their skills, learn how equipment is operated, and understand what a response to an incident looks like. These opportunities also strengthen teamwork and communication, so that during an actual emergency, our crews work seamlessly together. Additionally, this exercise allowed us to identify areas of improvement and keeps us prepared to maintain the safety of both our team and the community we serve.”

Farmers play a critical role in food production, and Wolverine is committed to ensuring their safety when working near pipelines. It's important to understand the potential risks of digging or plowing in areas where pipelines are buried.

Our PIPE Program educates farmers on how to safely operate equipment and avoid pipeline damage. By calling 811 before any digging activity, farmers can locate pipelines and ensure that their work is conducted safely.

Did you know that pipeline depth can vary significantly based on terrain and environmental factors? It's important for landowners and the public to understand how the Depth of Cover program monitors cover over buried pipe to identify areas of concern to communicate land use restrictions to farmers, landowners and the community to protect our communities and the environment.

Pipelines remain the safest, most efficient way to transport fuel compared to truck or rail. Studies conducted by the Liquids Energy Pipeline Association (LEPA) have shown that pipelines result in fewer spills and incidents, while reducing congestion and emissions from truck transport.

PIPE Program

Wolverine's community outreach program is called the Partners in Pipeline Education or PIPE. Through the PIPE Program, we make personal connections to the local Fire Departments, Police Departments, Emergency Management Personnel, Government Officials and other stakeholders with whom we work with for normal operation and maintenance activities and in case of an actual emergency. We are currently scheduling virtual and in-person PIPE Presentations for the remaining calendar year. If interested in participating in this program, click here to contact Chelsea Yi.
