After a long hiatus, we were finally able to host our popular Becoming Independent Olympics once again!! Thank you to the Santa Rosa Junior College for hosting our athletes and to the amazing circle of supporters who helped bring this event back!

These events are made possible because of supporters who fund our programs and because of the incredible staff who continue to find ways to enrich the lives of the individuals we support.

National Pumpkin Day

Fun fact: The record for largest pumpkin in the world was broken in 2021, with a gourd so big that it weighed in at 2703 lbs! That's a lot of pumpkin pie!

Last week on 10/20/22 at 10:20 AM, Becoming Independent participated in The Great California ShakeOut as an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer during big earthquakes.

The ShakeOut began in Southern California in 2008 as a drill designed to educate the public about how to protect themselves during a large earthquake, and how to get prepared. Great Shakeout Earthquake Drills are now held in more than 20 Official ShakeOut Regions.

$100 Million Going Toward Autism Research

The National Institutes of Health is making major investments into research projects looking at how autism impacts a person's development, sleep, mental health, aging and more. The federal agency said this month that it is awarding $100 million to nine different research efforts over the next five years through its Autism Centers of Excellence program.
