Working Together to Make a
Positive Difference in the Community
A Publication from the Office of the County Administrator - Issue 103-2019
Message from the County Administrator
Autumn is here! Although the weather is still quite warm, there are many exciting activities and opportunities available for Camden County residents in the coming months, including the Rock Shrimp Festival and Scarecrow Stroll in St. Marys and the Catfish Festival in Kingsland. Additionally, Photographers are encouraged to submit their pictures to the 2019 Showcase Camden County Photo Contest.
As we remain in hurricane season, it is vital to stay aware of potential tropical activity. Our community was fortunate to receive very little of the forecasted impacts from Hurricane Dorian. All Camden County residents are strongly encouraged to sign-up for the CodeRED emergency notification system to receive emergency messages. It is also incredibly important to create or review your family's hurricane plan in addition to checking the contents of your emergency kit.

I would like to take a moment to highlight some Camden County Fire Rescue's recent activities. In July five new firefighters graduated from their most recent recruit class, followed by the delivery of a new Tanker 11 in August. Earlier this month firefighters moved into a new Firehouse 18 in Tarboro. Under the leadership of the Board of Commissioners and Chief Terry Smith, new firefighter paramedics now qualify for a $5,000 sign-on bonus.

Wishing you a happy Fall!

Yours for a better Camden,
Steve L. Howard, MPA, ICMA-CM, CPM, CPPO
County Administrator

Kingsland By-Pass Phase I Update
Phase I of the Kingsland By-Pass is continuing progress. Although there was a major traffic pattern shift in early August, patterns will continue to change throughout the rest of the project to get all the base construction completed.

Drivers may notice that there is a 1.5” difference in height between the curb and gutter and the asphalt at this time. While the project is under construction this is an acceptable practice for driving lanes. The reason for it is so the final top layer of asphalt can be laid in one continuous task to make the final driving surface smooth.

Additionally, the northern I-95 interchange bridge has been recently demolished and reconstruction is underway. There is approximately one year of construction remaining for phase I. Drivers are urged to slow down while driving through the work zones.
