Childcare is a Community Issue—and Our Economy Depends on It
Source: First Five Nebraska (firstfivenebraska.org)
Here in our communities, families depend on quality childcare every day. But Nebraska
faces a growing crisis in the childcare industry, with a 30% turnover rate in 2022-2023
and 11% fewer professionals than in 2018. Low wages and limited support make it
difficult for early childhood educators to stay in the field.
This instability doesn’t just affect childcare centers. When programs are understaffed,
families in our neighborhoods struggle to find care, forcing parents to miss work or leave
jobs altogether. Local businesses feel the impact, too, as employees face unpredictable
schedules or drop out of the workforce entirely. Childcare isn’t just about kids—it’s the
backbone of our economy.
Other states are addressing this crisis by piloting programs that empower local centers
to offer better pay and make childcare careers more rewarding. By adopting similar
initiatives, we could strengthen our community and economy.
Here’s how you can help:
-
Talk to local leaders and your Senator about the importance of supporting childcare initiatives.
-
Encourage local businesses to invest in childcare solutions for employees.
-
Start the conversation with friends and neighbors—childcare is a shared issue.
Everyone in our community knows someone who relies on childcare. Together, we can make a difference.
