As stated by the Department of Homeland Security human trafficking is defined as the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act. It can happen in any community and victims can be any race, age, gender or nationality. Typically, traffickers use violence, manipulation, false promises of well-paying jobs, and romantic relationships to lure victims. Many times, people fall into the hands of traffickers because they have language barriers and fear of their traffickers and law enforcement.
It is extremely important to be aware that human trafficking is on the rise in Nebraska and learning to recognize key indicators that identifies a victim can save a person’s life. There can be many indicators but only a few will be added below:
Some Key Indicators:
- Is the person disoriented or confused, or showing signs of mental or physical abuse?
- Is the person fearful, timid, or submissive?
- Is the person often in the company of someone to whom he or she defers? Or someone who seems to be in control of the situation, e.g., where they go or whom they talk to?
If you suspect someone is being trafficked, please call 1-866-347-2423. To get help from the National Human Trafficking Hotline call 1-888-373-7888. Remember that identifying a victim can save a life.
