Dear Neighbor,

Along with Mainers across the state, I am devastated by the mass shooting tragedy that occurred in Lewiston last week. I am grieving for those who lost their lives and will continue to keep the friends and families of all who have been impacted in my heart.

It was shocking to see such a senseless act of violence perpetrated so close to home. Maine has historically been considered one of the safest states in the country, but that sense of security has been shattered. Now, our state is beginning the long and difficult process of healing – one that will be undoubtedly tough for all of us.

I want to commend and thank the first responders, emergency personnel and hospital staff who answered the call to action that night, and express gratitude for all who worked day and night to address this tragedy as it unfolded.

As a lawmaker, I feel compelled to do everything in my power to ensure that a tragedy like this never happens again. Thoughts and prayers are not enough, and they never have been. I am committed to continuing to push for common sense gun safety legislation, such as a strong Extreme Risk Protection Order, or Red Flag Law, as well as other policies that I outlined in this recent Bangor Daily News op-ed. Reforms like these would respect constitutional rights while bolstering public safety, and would constitute meaningful steps toward reducing the likelihood of more gun violence in our state.

Additionally, for those who are struggling in the aftermath of last week’s events, please know that there are state and federal resources available for support, which I have included below.

The only way to move forward is together. To heal, we must lean on one another and provide the necessary space to grieve and reflect. Please take care of yourselves and each other.

Sincerely,

Sally Cluchey
