Dear friends and colleagues,
This past year was a heavy one. According to a report by Climate Central, 2025 ranked among the most costly years on record for weather and climate disasters, driven in large part by the LA wildfires, which became the most expensive wildfire in U.S. history. Layered onto this is the uncertainty surrounding Zone 0 regulations, political tension, funding uncertainty, and global conflict. All the while, Ventura County continues to recover from the Mountain Fire, which remains an ongoing reality for many residents. It can be exhausting when so much feels beyond our ability to influence or control.
While there are many things that seem out of our control, wildfire risk is one area where our actions truly matter. The recent rains were deeply needed to provide moisture to the land, but they will also lead to increased vegetation growth, heavier fuel loads, and higher wildfire risk as things dry out. We can act now to reduce risk through practical, incremental steps. In a world that often feels out of our control, let’s work together to make an impact where we can.
As we move into 2026, I encourage residents to focus on what is within reach. Start with defensible space and Zone 0. Be ready to evacuate. Sign up for VC Alert. Harden your home when able. Connect with your neighbors through Firewise. While some of these actions are easy and affordable, others can present barriers. This is also a call to our elected officials. It’s time to step up and further incentivize homeowner action. We all have a part to play. If you don’t know where to begin, our free home assessments can help break it down into manageable steps. Share this resource with your friends, family, and neighbors so that we can support you in creating a safer community for you and your loved ones.
