In 1961, Freedom Riders, groups of volunteers, black and white, male and female, rode a Greyhound bus to Montgomery, Alabama in protest of segregation in public transportation. Students will visit this museum and learn about these courageous young people and the work they did to protest using non-violent methods.

"Minecraft Hour of Code Workshop"
One of Microsoft's MOST Popular Coding Programs!!!
Explore Minecraft Themed Worlds
Wednesday - 2/17/21; 11:00 AM - Noon
Appropriate for Students 8+ - Older Students & Adults New to Coding Welcome!
In this unique, creative, one-hour virtual workshop, students eight and older will have fun learning and being inspired by Minecraft, computer science and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Using the power of code and AI, students will actually learn to program the Agent character to prevent forest fires and regrow a forest!
By the end of the workshop, students will have:
- Instructed a computer to perform fundamental coding tasks.
- Understood basic AI concepts and coding concepts such as loops and events.
- Experienced how AI is being used in the real-world to promote conservation and sustainability.

Bugs represent the largest group of animals on Earth! They account for at least 75% of all known animal species and without them, larger animals could not exist. While insects can destroy crops, spread disease, and be nuisance, they clean up environmental waste, pollinate many flowering plants and provide food necessary for larger animals to survive!
Assembled by the entomologists at the LI Exhibition Center: Bug Exhibit, the Insect Preservatory contains several hundred preserved insect specimens. It showcases some of the largest, most beautiful and most biologically interesting bugs in the world.
Trained specialists offer opportunity to see and learn more about bugs like the Large Devil’s Walking Sticks, Orchid Mantis, Leaf Insects, Giant Beetles and more! You won’t see this amazing collection of bugs from all over the world, anywhere else!

Also, thousands of butterflies from all over the world now live at the L.I. Aquarium. Some flutter and flit from flower to flower, sipping nectar. While others enjoy feeding on fruit at several secluded feeding stations. Still others hide in the many trees and vines, resting up for their next flight.
Because most butterflies only live for a couple of weeks, new butterflies arrive directly from Africa, Central America, South America, Asia, and North America constantly! The entomologists at the Butterflies, Bugs & Birds Exhibit receive 800-1,200 butterfly pupae each week! At any one time, there are 40-50 different species of butterflies flying in the habitat. The Exhibition Center receives 150 different species, so each time you visit, you will see new and exciting butterfly species!

Seeking "Heartfelt Messages" For Elderly Residents
Student Community Service Project
"#HeartfeltMessages Project"
NOW through 2/8/21
Students of any age, township-wide are sought to participate in this heartfelt town-wide project to spread their own heartfelt "thinking of you" messages with frail, elderly residents at St. Catherine of Siena Nursing And Rehabilitation Care Center. Participation can provide up to Two Hours of Community Service Credit!

Students are asked to use the heart template provided below to make decorated heartfelt cards to cheer up these senior residents for Valentine's Day with messages of encouragement; thinking of you; and other uplifting, positive sentiments.

Participants in this town-wide project are asked to take a photo of themselves holding & dropping off their personalized cards at the Town Hall Collection Site, and sending this photo to the Youth Bureau at the email below. Include the student's full name as they would like it to appear on the Town Certificate of Community Service. Their certificate will then be mailed to them.
The Drop-Off Collection Box is located right inside the front entrance of Smithtown Town Hall, 99 West Main Street, Smithown.
- ONE hour of Community Service Credit will be provided for each THREE personalized cards made & dropped off.

Students can earn up to a Maximum of TWO hours of Community Service Credit by making & dropping off SIX Cards.

The Town of Smithtown Youth Bureau would like to announce the formation of a virtual International Rotary - District 7255 Student Interact Club, which encompasses all local townships and beyond!

Interact is an official program of Rotary International, in which students of high school age are encouraged to engage in Community Service activities similar to those done by Rotary Club members themselves. Rotarians provide guidance to the the student Interact Club members.
Connect with leaders in your community and around the world to:
- Take action to make a difference in your school and community
- Discover new cultures and promote international understanding
- Become a leader in your school and community
- Have fun and make new friends from other school districts AND around the world

What’s involved?
Interact clubs organize at least two projects every year, one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding. Rotary club adult sponsors mentor and guide Interactors as they carry out projects and develop leadership skills.

Now more than ever food donations are critical to help many families through these unimaginably difficult times!

1.Long Island Cares has always been a great advocate and friend to the people of Smithtown and beyond. During the coronavirus, LI Cares has been working around the clock despite the obstacles. Residents can help by making monetary donations: Donate Funds Here
2.Island Harvest relies on the kindness of the public year-round to feed those who are most in need. Residents can help during the COVID-19 pandemic by clicking here and: donating online
Each $25 donation will go towards supplying a family meal kit, which provides food for three to four days.

Helping a Furry Friend!!!
Foster a Dog or Cat: Due to COVID-19, the Smithtown Animal Shelter has had to restrict public access to confirmed adoption appointments and animal/wildlife rescue. Residents with no other pets or young children at home can apply to foster a rescue dog. Families looking to serve the community can sign up to foster cats as well. The shelter staff is limited at this time, so Town officials ask that the only serious foster applicants apply.
- ONLY Approved Adoption Appointments will be permitted to enter the Shelter.
- Call to discuss what you are looking for in a pet and we can help you decide if we have a pet that suits your lifestyle.
- Schedule a FaceTime interaction with the pet that you are interested in.
- We will help you get a feel for the animal’s personality and typical interaction with its caretakers.
- Fill out an application- They are available on our website, or we can email/fax one to you.
- Once you have an approved application, you may meet the pet that you are interested in at the shelter, weather permitting we will hold all dog interactions outside.
We assure you that the animals are getting plenty of love, attention and medical care despite the limited access to the public. On behalf of the Town of Smithtown and the Animal Shelter team, we wish you all health and positive thinking during this troubling time. As a united community, we will get through this!

Town of Smithtown Horizons Counseling & Education Center
Horizons Counseling and Education Center is an OASAS-licensed not-for-profit agency funded to provide adolescent and adult treatment, prevention and education services for drug and alcohol related problems.
We want our community members to know that we are available to help. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or are interested in services. Some self-care ideas to help during this unstable time are to: find a supportive network, attend 12 step programs, utilize positive coping skills, and reach out to loved ones (even virtually if needed). These are healthy and meaningful supports that we can give to ourselves. We look forward to providing more programs and events to the community in 2021!
Horizons Counseling and Education Center's Prevention Program has been working with local schools to develop and offer drug and alcohol presentations virtually.
