Hendersonville, NC — July 30, 2025 — Abilities Tennis Association of North Carolina (ATANC) has once again been selected for the national spotlight—chosen as one of a few organizations across the country to participate in the prestigious USTA Net Generation On-Court Experience at the 2025 US Open.
On September 1, 2025, 24 athletes with intellectual disabilities from across North Carolina will take the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City, representing Abilities Tennis in a high-profile exhibition before the evening match. One of the athletes will even have the honor of tossing the coin for that evening’s professional match—a moment that shines a national light on inclusive tennis and the exceptional talent of adaptive athletes.
This marks ATANC’s second appearance at the US Open, following its first participation in 2019. “We’re proud that all 24 selected this year are first-time participants—a sign of just how much the program has grown,” said Lou Welch, Executive Director of ATANC. “We were overwhelmed—in the best possible way—by the number of applications we received. Each athlete was thoughtfully chosen based on their clinic and tournament participation, travel readiness, and above all, their passion for the game.”
Two athletes and two parents from the Abilities Tennis program in Hendersonville held at Jackson Park will attend the US Open. The support of the tennis community has been inspiring and has made the trip possible for these athletes.
