Leadership: A necessary ingredient for a Community Thanksgiving meal
Hello!
At our September meeting, the Vestry started to consider plans for observing the special events and feast days coming up through the end of the year, given the restrictions of the pandemic. While we made some headway, one stumbling block was our community Thanksgiving meal
|
|
|
|
As most of you know, the meal has been one of Ascension’s main outreach programs, offering a hot meal to members of the community on the Sunday before Thanksgivng. In addition to the meal itself, the endeavor provides a chance for fellowship, both to guests and to all those who volunteer to help. Sadly, pandemic considerations will prevent us from offering the meal in any recognizable way this year.
If nothing else, the $1,000 in our budget could be devoted to meet markedly rising food pantry demand. But a number of you have suggested a variety of alternative approaches and endeavors. Most or all have good merit as ideas, and money in our budget could be devoted to a sensible alternative. But a leadership team of at least two or three persons will be needed if we're to translate ideas into action and meaningful outcomes.
If you have a vision for a meaningful alternative to our community meal and are willing and able to lead, please contact me in the next few days. I'd like for the Vestry to decide on a direction at our meeting this Saturday, October 17.
Thanks for your consideration.
Gary Alexander, Senior Warden

A Note from Seminarian Bonnie Scott: Thank you for your kind words of welcome! It was wonderful to correspond with some of you in person and via email. If you’re interested in dropping into an open zoom call or in scheduling a one on one, please reach out to me at my email address: [email protected]. With gratitude, Bonnie

The October Vestry meeting will be held virtually via Zoom on Saturday, October 17, starting at 11:30 a.m. Unless otherwise indicated all Vestry meetings are public; anyone may attend. We will be considering an investment in an audio/video/live-streaming system as well as initial considerations with regard to the 2021 operating budget and parish leadership.
|
|
Can you help host a virtual coffee hour? We started our Sunday virtual coffee hours almost immediately after pandemic restrictions took effect. For many, they have provided a meaningful connection opportunity at a time where meaningful connections are hard to come by. Those of us who hosted prior to the start of in-person worship are no longer able to be present or host. We'd love to identify a half dozen hosts who would serve on a rotating basis. This role is low-tech (if you are already able to Zoom) and high reward. Training is available. Please contact me or either warden.

I publish the Banns of Marriage between Shane Patrick Gormley and Leslie Gurina Smebak, who will be joined in Holy Matrimony on October 17, here at the Ascension. I bid your prayers for them and their marriage. If any of you know cause, or just impediment, why these two persons should not be joined together in Holy Matrimony, you are to declare it. This is the third and final time of asking.

Due to COVID-19, Church of the Ascension’s Treasurer and Bookkeeper are limiting the amount of time they spend working in the parish offices. Ever feel like you have a 'bear in mind' Or if not a bear ...
– Fr. Raymond +
Bear in Mind
by John Martin
A bear is chasing me through a meadow
and I’m running as fast as I can but
he’s gaining on me—it seems
he’s always gaining on me.
I’m running and running but also
thinking I should just
turn around and say,
“Stop it! Stop chasing me. We both
know you aren’t going to catch me.
All you can ever do is chase me. So,
think about it—why bother?”
The bear does stop,
and he sits on his haunches and thinks,
or seems to think. And then
the bear says to me,
“I have to chase you, you know
that. Or you should. And, sure,
we both know I’ll never catch you.
So, why not give us both a break and
just stop thinking about me?”
But, with that said, he gets back on four feet,
sticks his long pink tongue out, licks down
both sides of his snout. Then he sighs, looks
behind himself, then at me and says, “Okay,
ready when you are.”
