Dear Friends,

Another busy time in Albany as we move towards the adoption of the budget. I continue to lead the fight to restore funding to our public schools, support our hospitals, nursing homes, and home care workers, expand housing production and protect rental tenants, and push for increased funding for our local roads and bridges. There is much more on the budget, but I have sought to have the priorities of our district at the top of my list.

My heart is heavy with the murder of NYC Police Officer Jonathan Diller. It is a dark day when a police officer is killed in the line of duty. I am committed to working with my colleagues and law enforcement to protect all New Yorkers from those who threaten the safety of our police and our communities.

You should know that among other issues I am pushing, I am championing language to provide additional tools to prosecutors when there are multiple petit larcenies by shoplifters. I know this is a dangerous trend that must be confronted. I am hopeful it will make it into the final budget.

If there is anything my office can assist you with, please email me at smayer@nysenate.gov or call (914) 934-5250.

Warm regards,

Shelley B. Mayer

Mayer Bills Pass Senate

I am pleased two of my bills have passed the Senate this week.

S.2301, creating the crime of voyeurism. This bill expands the “Peeping Tom” law to include unlawful surveillance without an imaging device. Currently, New York law only applies to Peeping Tom cases that involve imaging devices.

S.2976, requires the Department of Labor to notify claimants applying for unemployment benefits within 30 days whether the claim has been approved or denied. New Yorkers deserve to hear whether or not they are eligible for unemployment insurance benefits in a timely manner.

Honoring Vietnam Veterans

I was honored to welcome Vietnam Veterans from Westchester and Putnam counties to Albany this week in honor of the 51st anniversary of U.S. troops returning home from the Vietnam War. I was proud to co-sponsor the Resolution proclaiming March 29th as Vietnam Veterans Day in New York State. Thank you to Senator Pete Harckham and Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton for organizing this day, and a special acknowledgment to Chet Edwards, co-chair of my Veterans Advisory Committee, for his presence in Albany today.

Fighting for Home Care

Proud to stand with New York Caring Majority, 1199 SEIU, and my colleagues to fight for a final budget that does not make detrimental cuts to home care for our aging New Yorkers and those with disabilities. We will continue to fight for a final budget that appropriately reflects our commitment to our most vulnerable residents, aging and disabled New Yorkers, and the caregivers who help them live independently.

Celebrating Greek Independence Day

It was an honor to welcome his Eminence Archbishop Archbishop Elpidophoros of America to Albany to celebrate the anniversary of Greece’s Independence with two of my Senate Greek-American colleagues, Deputy Leader Mike Gianaris, and Senator Andrew Gounardes.

Scarsdale High Honors Wind Ensemble in Albany with the New York State School Music Association

It was a pleasure to welcome the Scarsdale High School Honors Wind Ensemble and their Director, Brian Zeller, to Albany and to hear them perform! Thank you to the New York State School Music Association for sponsoring their appearance. Brava!

Delivering Food with Hillside Food Outreach

It was a pleasure joining Hillside Food Outreach to deliver groceries to Robert Pugliese, a 78-year-old resident of Port Chester. Hillside Food Outreach does an excellent job delivering healthy foods to over 1,000 households each month across Westchester, Putnam, and Fairfield Counties. Thank you to Mount Kisco resident Kathleen Purdy for starting this important non-profit and to everyone who helps support our neighbors in need.

Sound Shore St. Patrick’s Day Parade

I had a terrific time marching in the Sound Shore St. Patrick's Day parade with my friends and colleagues in government.
