Black History is American History
Black History Month is a time for celebrating the achievements of, honoring the history of, and acknowledging the disparities still facing the Black community.
Black lives have always and will continue to matter. Black life is rich, varied, and distinct. When we isolate the teaching of the history of Black people - or any other marginalized group - to a month, we continue to "other" their lives and experiences. Let us take time to celebrate Black history this month, but celebrate and teach Black history all year long.
Here are some family-friendly resources to share as you celebrate Black History Month as a family:
Kids Explain Black History Month - watch this video with your child(ren) to hear from Black children's perspectives about the importance of celebrating Black culture.
National Geographic Kids: Black History Month - explore this website to start a discussion about famous Black leaders, including Frederick Douglass, Thurgood Marshall, Mae Jemison and Barack Obama.
