IB Bulldogs Blast

Greetings Tubman Families,

We are off to a wonderful start for the month of December. When it comes to decision making, we believe all views and voices should be heard and considered. There are a number of ways that you can support and advocate for Tubman by attending various district meetings coming up this week.

Warm regards,

Principal Gibson & AP Moore

COVID & Chicago Department of Public Health Updates

As more students are eligible for COVID vaccinations we encourage parents/guardians to provide completed vaccination cards for copying in our main office. In the case of a CPS issued quarantine, students who are vaccinated and are asymptomatic will be allowed to continue coming to school if we have the vaccination card on file. Additionally, in case of travel if a child is vaccinated that allows for the student to come to school rather than quarantining. Please click here for travel guidance. We kindly ask that a parent/guardian brings in the original vaccination card to the main office so we can make a clear copy for our records.

Covid Testing Program for Students

If you are interested in having your child participate in testing, please register here. Testing is administered on Fridays and is optional for students, except for unvaccinated and partially vaccinated student athletes in 5th-8th grade. If you would like to confirm that your child is registered, please contact the CPS COVID-19 Testing Team at covidtestingcps@cps.edu.

Chicago Department of Public Health

If you have a child aged 5-11, the Chicago Department of Public Health would like to ask you to please participate in a virtual focus group!

Qualified individuals who complete a full 90-minute online discussion session will earn $50. You just need access to the internet on a selected day in December via computer. Focus groups will be hosted in English and Spanish and will take place from 7:00pm-8:30pm the week of December 13.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts. If you would like to participate, click HERE and please share this with the other Chicago parents or guardians.

If you have questions about the research, please email healthychicago@cityofchicago.org.

Bathroom Signage

In the past week our bathroom signage has been updated for equitable bathroom use. In practice at Tubman we have already had in place inclusive bathroom practices for all genders. The shift for us is in the specific type of signage. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights issued guidance explaining that Title IX’s prohibition on discrimination on the basis of sex includes (1) discrimination based on sexual orientation and (2) discrimination based on gender identity. It is now under the purview of Title IX that students must have fair and equitable access to restroom facilities that align with their gender identity and comfort. The new signs indicate bathrooms that are Girls +, Boys +, All Gender Multi-Stall and All Gender Single Stall. Click here to hear more about these changes. These changes to Title IX are in direct alignment with our previous district guidelines on supporting transgender and gender non-conforming students and policy on nondiscrimination. A district level virtual Ask the Expert event will be held on Tuesday, December 14 from 4–5 p.m. to help explain this policy. Click here to register for this event.

Student Council Club Food Drive

November 18th- December 15th

Our Student Council Club members have organized a food drive to give to our local community and families in need. We are encouraging Tubman students to donate an item to be placed in their classroom donation box throughout the next four weeks. We are accepting donations of canned foods, dry foods, and toiletries, which will be provided to local shelters and organizations in our community. Please send donations with your child between November 18 and December 15. Thank you for your support!

School Funding Public Forums

For the third consecutive year, CPS is hosting School Funding Public Forums to engage the community around the District’s school budgeting process. These forums will provide an overview of CPS' current funding process and give participants the chance to share the needs of their school communities and offer suggestions on how to make the District’s school funding process more equitable, transparent, and sustainable.

The following are the details for these virtual forums:

  • Tuesday, December 7, 2021 6–8 p.m.
  • Thursday, December 9, 2021 4–6 p.m.

Please complete this registration form to participate. Registration will close at noon the day of the event.

CPS Accountability Redesign Survey

As you may know, CPS has been working to improve our district accountability system (previously known as the School Quality Rating Program, or SQRP). In order to create a more equitable system, we need your help.

A survey has been created to gather feedback from all members of the CPS community: students in grades 6-12, parents, teachers, and staff members. The survey is available in 20 languages. The survey closes  on Thursday, December 23, 2021.

If you have any questions regarding the attached materials or the survey, please do not hesitate to contact us at sqrp@cps.edu.

Local School Council (LSC)

Our Tubman Local School Council supports and partners in the important work of monitoring our Continuous Improvement Work Plan, approving our annual budget, and evaluating our principal. We encourage you to reach out to the LSC representatives as you have questions about these three areas.

CPS has advised that public participation is the most effective way to engage our community during meetings so that all LSC members can hear and respond as helpful. Prior to each LSC meeting community members can sign up for public participation, or during the meeting itself. This process then follows the Open Meeting Act procedures transparently. All are welcome!
