Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The San Geronimo Valley Community Center is excited to launch West Marin Wheels, a new volunteer transportation program designed to help older adults in the San Geronimo Valley and Nicasio stay healthy, connected, and independent when driving is no longer an option. Created in response to the findings of our 2024 Older Adult Needs Assessment, this neighbors-driving-neighbors model is an important step toward making aging in place a reality in our rural community.
We are currently seeking volunteer drivers ahead of our Volunteer Driver Training on August 19. By giving as little as six hours per month, volunteers can make an incredible difference—helping neighbors get to medical appointments, grocery stores, the pharmacy, Community Center programs, and other essential destinations. Drivers use their own vehicles, choose trips that fit their schedules, and receive training and ongoing support.
At the same time, we are beginning to enroll older adults who would like to become riders, with the goal of matching volunteer drivers and riders and beginning trips as early as September 1.
If you're looking for a meaningful way to give back, enjoy meeting new people, and strengthen the fabric of our community, we'd love to have you join the West Marin Wheels team.

This August, the San Geronimo Valley Community Center, in partnership with the Marin AgeWell Collaborative, and Two Valleys Community Land Trust will present What About Age, a month-long series of exhibitions, films, discussions, and community events exploring aging, memory, housing, and the experience of growing older in community.
Event highlights include:

Sunday, August 9, 4 - 6 pm: Opening Reception What About Age and Then & Now: Faces of the Valley Exhibition. The reception will be followed by a film screening of Lives Well Lived. RSVP for the film and reception here.

The San Geronimo Valley Community Center proudly presents the artwork of Josh Flores in the Living Room of the Maurice Del Mue Galleries. There will be a reception for the artist on August 9 from 2 - 4 pm. Josh will be doing live portraits during the reception.
Josh has previously exhibited work in the San Rafael Youth In Arts Program and the “What About Age?” exhibit at the Marin Civic Center and the “One If By Land, Two if By Sea” show at the Bolinas Art Museum. This is Josh’s first solo exhibition at the Community Center.
Titled “BIG Feels”, the inspiration for his first solo show came from his recent birthday, when he experienced emotional sadness related to fear of abandonment. He created the first piece titled “Sad Boi Birthday” to illustrate the depth of the emotion he was feeling. Each piece is created with a graphite sketch followed by ink and alcohol marker. Community Vocal Tapestry, a monthly gathering led by Anny Owen and Kelly McMenimen, happens on Friday, August 14, from 7 – 8:30 pm and will continue every second Friday of the month in the Community Center’s cozy Living Room. Explore playful vocal creativity, group activities, and deep listening in a welcoming space for all experience levels. Come connect, express, and have fun through voice!

On Friday, August 28, Kate’s Cafe will happen from 7 - 9:30 pm. Hosted by Juliette Valente, Kate’s Cafe Open Mic has been the place for incredible music and connection at the Community Center for more than 25 years. Both aspiring and renowned musicians, poets and actors come to share their new works and talents. Come to share, come to listen!

On Saturday, October 10, the Community Center's signature annual benefit returns in our courtyard for an unforgettable evening celebrating everything that makes our Valley extraordinary. This year's event is especially meaningful as we honor Zoila Berardi, founder of our after school program whose remarkable 50 years of service have shaped generations of children and families throughout West Marin.
Guests will enjoy cocktails, oysters from Hog Island Oyster Co., a sit down dinner featuring authentic Central Texas barbecue from Lone Mountain Barbecue, casino-style games presented by Atomic Casino, a silent auction featuring more than 75 incredible items from local businesses, and live music from internationally acclaimed Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys. Swim Lessons at the Woodacre Improvement Club (WIC)
The San Geronimo Valley Community Center (SGVCC) is excited to continue our partnership with the Woodacre Improvement Club (WIC) to offer swim lessons this summer. This collaboration provides a wonderful opportunity for local residents to build confidence in the water, improve their swimming skills, and stay safe this summer. By working together, SGVCC and WIC are strengthening community connections, promoting water safety for all ages, and ensuring that swimming education remains accessible to families in our valley. 6 day sessions happen July 6 - August 15. Rainbow Playgroup happens from 9:30 am - 12 pm each Tuesday and Friday in the Community Center East Room. Rainbow Playgroup is designed for caretakers to have a safe place for their little ones (ages 0-5) to play and socialize.

On Saturday, August 22, from 11 am to 3 pm, at the Nicasio ball field, come to the NICASIO COUNTRY FAIR!
Organized by the NVFD Ladies Auxiliary, this free community event will feature live music from the Long Tom Bluegrass Band, a BBQ, a dunk tank, baby goats, face painting, fire trucks to climb on, a cake and pie stand, children’s games with prizes, a fabulous silent auction, local vendors and non-profits. Come and enjoy the fun!
Proceeds will benefit the Nicasio Volunteer Fire Department.

| | The Stewards of the Land photography and story exhibition is now traveling to all Marin County Free Library branches. Originally created by the San Geronimo Valley Community Center's NextGen GreenStitch Climate Internship Program, led by Cory van Gelder, and first presented at Climate Fest 2025, the exhibition features striking black-and-white portraits by Sasha Gulish alongside stories that celebrate the Indigenous diaspora in Marin County and honor their enduring traditions of reciprocity and stewardship of the land. The exhibition is currently on view at the Bolinas and Stinson Beach libraries. | |
On Sunday, August 16 from 9 am - 3 pm Plein Air artists of all levels are invited to come paint and draw at the San Geronimo Valley Community Garden in celebration of the garden’s 15th anniversary. Bring your art supplies, your portable easel or board, a stool, a shade umbrella, water, a snack. There are limited tables and benches in a shaded area. The San Geronimo Valley Elders Advisory Council is a gathering of individuals and representatives of organizations that identify and address the needs of elders of the San Geronimo Valley and Nicasio through coordination, advocacy, trusted advising and agreed upon actions. The Elders Advisory Council inspires connections, builds community, and creates opportunities for meaningful engagement. The Elders Advisory Council normally meets on 3rd Wednesday of the month at 2pm.
NOTE: The next meeting will be Wednesday, August 19.

The San Geronimo Valley Community Center, in partnership with Two Valleys Community Land Trust, Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco, CLAM, BCLT, and the Marin Aging and Disability Institute are looking for folks aged 60 and above to participate in a 30 minute phone call regarding Aging in Place.
Topics of discussion will include:
- Your goals for staying independent at home
- Home safety concerns or needed improvements
- Services or support that would help you most

On the fourth Tuesday of each month, at 1pm, the Community Center hosts a support group that LGBTQ identifying Seniors can join. Facilitator Bill Blackburn creates an inclusive, open, and safe space for LGBTQ+ Seniors to share and connect. Contact Bill Blackburn at 415-450-5339 with any questions.

Please note: August 20 is the next in the series of Cinema San Geronimo. Cinema San Geronimo will screen in the East Room at 4 pm on the 2nd Thursday of each month.
The next screening will feature “Wag The Dog." This 1997 Dark Comedy is about a political spin doctor and Hollywood producer fabricating a fake war to distract the public from a presidential scandal, exposing the power of media and political manipulation.

Our drive-through Food Bank is open today at the Commons parking lot. The address is 5800 Sir Francis Drake Blvd, San Geronimo CA 94963. We will be open between 11 am - 2 pm. There is no registration or proof of eligibility necessary. As you drive through, a volunteer will place your groceries into your trunk. Marin County EMS Agency is hosting Sidewalk CPR events throughout Marin on August 15 from 10 am - 2 pm. This is a free lifesaving skills training day on how to respond in an emergency. There will be 13 locations across Marin including Toby’s Feed Barn in Pt. Reyes Station and Bolinas Park in Fairfax. Learn more here.

In the past, West Marin health fairs offered services like health screenings and vaccinations. Now, they want to create events that better reflect the needs and interests of each community. Please take a few minutes to complete this short survey. Your feedback will help plan health events that are welcoming, useful, and relevant.

Where to get updated emergency information:
The new AlertMarin system, based on community feedback, simplifies the process with no required user account and takes under five minutes to complete. You can sign up or update your info in English or Spanish, and remember: AlertMarin is the only emergency alert system used countywide for critical, life-saving notifications. All existing users were automatically migrated—no need to sign up again unless your contact info has changed.

The Community Center has postage paid packaging for safe medication disposal supply. If you have expired or unwanted medications, please come grab a mailing envelope from the main lobby. This mail-back program is a simple way to help protect our communities from drug misuse, diversion, and environmental contamination. With these mail-back envelopes, consumers can safely discard medication from the comfort of their own home. The mail-back envelopes are free & include paid return postage.

Please note that the Community Gym will be closed August 12 -14 for maintenance. The gym will reopen on Sunday, August 15.
