Pastor’s Note

Today is the end of the Christmas Season with the celebration of Epiphany, when the Magi bring gifts to the newborn King. We are in the ministry season of Gift: Given and Received. We at SJV value the gift of people! We thank our seminarian Deacon Duy for the gift of his vocation and his service during the Christmas season with us. Come support all the seminarians in the annual Revs vs Sems Basketball Challenge on Sunday, Jan 21 (details below). The game is a fun way to show that the ministers of the church are human (and some competitive).

January is our month of making the gift of invitations as joyful disciples. It takes 3 separate invitations for people to consider making an important decision such as considering priesthood or going to Alpha. For the next 2 weeks, I am asking you to take the Alpha invitation cards and this email/bulletin to extend an invitation to somebody who is away from God and the practice of the faith. I am also asking you to providing me the names of young men and women to invite to the annual discernment retreat people for priesthood and religious life (details below).

What better gift can you give your family member or friend the gift of a personal relationship with God! What better gift can you give our young people than an invitation to serving God with their life!

Don’t forget to spend 15 minutes a day with the word of God and ask God WHO SHOULD I BE INVITING? Read on for opportunities to know Christ, encounter Christ, and serve Christ. Also, Epiphany is the traditional time for house blessings. If you have never had your house blessed, Father Louis, myself or Deacon Raul are happy to come over. Appointments can be made with the office. Come to receive blessed chalk and bring water to be blessed at Masses this weekend for you to bless your own house (see below).

Saint John Vianney, pray for us!

Saints Balthasar, Melchior and Caspar, help us to offer worthy gifts!

God bless,

Fr Joe

How to bless your home with

Epiphany chalk

Once you acquire the blessed chalk from Masses this weekend, either a priest or another member of the household can bless the home in the following manner (adapted from the Roman Ritual):

Upon entering the house [or at the front door]:

Priest/Head of Household: Peace be to this house.

All: And to all who dwell herein.

Priest: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial.

During the Magnificat, the room is sprinkled with holy water and incensed.

All: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him

in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,

he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,

and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel

for he remembered his promise of mercy,

the promise he made to our fathers,

to Abraham and his children forever.

After this is completed:

All: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial.

Priest: Our Father Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead and lead us not into temptation,

All: But deliver us from evil.

Priest: All they from Saba shall come

All: Bringing gold and frankincense.

Priest: O Lord, hear my prayer.

All: And let my cry come unto Thee.

Priest:

Let us pray. O God, who by the guidance of a star didst on this day manifest Thine only-begotten Son to the Gentiles, mercifully grant that we who know Thee by faith may also attain the vision of Thy glorious majesty. Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

Priest: Be enlightened, be enlightened, O Jerusalem, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee– Jesus Christ born of the Virgin Mary.

All: And the Gentiles shall walk in thy light and kings in the splendor of thy rising, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon thee.

Priest: Let us pray. Bless, O Lord God almighty, this home, that in it there may be health, purity, the strength of victory, humility, goodness and mercy, the fulfillment of Thy law, the thanksgiving to God the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. And may this blessing remain upon this home and upon all who dwell herein. Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

After the prayers of the blessing are recited, walk through the house and bless each room by sprinkling with Epiphany/holy water and incensing it.

Take the blessed chalk and first write the initials of the three Wise Men, connected with Crosses, over the inside of your front door (on the lintel, if possible). Then write the year, breaking up the numbers and the year so that they fall on both sides of the initials. It should look like this, for example

20 C+M+B 24

with the “20 “being the millennium and century, the “C” standing for the first Wise Man, Caspar, the “M” standing for Melchior, the “B” standing for Balthasar, and the “24” standing for the decade and year. It is also popularly believed that the Kings’ initials stand for “Christus mansionem benedicat” (“Christ bless this house”).

ENCOUNTER CHRIST

Come spend an hour in prayer this Friday, January 5 through Saturday, January 6 for our first Friday 24 Hour Adoration Prayer to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Prayer will be in the Parish Office 9AM-3PM.

Beginning this Wednesday, January 3rd, we will commence the Novena and Bilingual Mass, honoring Our Lady of Perpetual Help, held every first Wednesday of the month at 7 PM. The Novena, dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, fosters a deep connection between devotees and Mary, recognizing her as a compassionate and understanding mother who listens earnestly to their prayers, offering comfort and support in times of difficulty. Your presence is welcomed and encouraged at 7 PM every First Wednesday.

Starting this Friday, January 5th, we will have Mass and Healing Prayer, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, held every first Friday of the month at 7 PM. Following the Mass, a brief charismatic healing prayer will take place, involving the use of Blessed Oil. It's important to note that this prayer does not constitute the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; rather, the oil is employed with the specific intention of healing. Additionally, during the Mass, we will perform an act of consecration of the Family to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We invite you to join us for the Healing Mass and Prayer at 7 PM every First Friday.

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!
