Pastor’s Note

Happy May! This is the month of Mary and the month devoted to mothers. This past Wednesday, our Bishop Cantu crowned the Blessed Virgin Mary with all our school children. (Today he returns to confirm 55 of our youth.) Later this month we will inaugurate the first ever Saint John Vianney Legion of Mary, a group of parishioners who are about the evangelization of our neighborhood. Saint Louis de Montfort, was an apostle of Mary who wrote the treatise called “True Devotion to Mary” in which he reflects how true devotion to Mary is actually true devotion to Jesus. He laments anyone who would think otherwise when he writes, “Let no one presume to expect mercy from God, who offends his holy Mother.” I would ask that each household pick up the rosary and pray minimally one decade together for every day of this month. As we honor our mothers this month, what better way than to honor God in prayer through the intercession of the Mother of God.

I am happy to announce that the new statue (you voted for last year) of Our Lady of Grace for our plaza has arrived! She and the Saint John Vianney statue had a trans-pacific voyage and arrived safely to San Jose. In addition to the Mother’s Day blessing and gift on May 12, we will kick-off our campaign for the plaza bricks. Please keep your ears peeled this weekend and look out for my letter to you regarding this final phase of our SJV75 campaign.

Thank you all for your birthday blessings! God has sent you May birthday pastors (Fr Steve Brown May 1, Msgr Francisco Rios and myself May 2). Read on for a France Pilgrimage Informational Night this Wednesday and details about Fiesta!

Mental Health Awareness Month:

May 2024

Mental Health is a critical component of human well-being. Therefore, ministering to those who struggle with their mental and emotional needs is an essential part of the pastoral care of the Church. As we enter Mental Health Awareness Month this May, St. John Vianney continues the tradition established in 1949 by Mental Health America. Together with the Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministry and the Diocese of San Jose, St. John Vianney Parish Mental Health Ministry is working on promoting mental health awareness and advocating for the emotional well-being of all, by building spiritual support groups and providing education and resources.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Our next 24 Hour Adoration of Jesus is Friday, May 3. Come spend an hour in prayer with Christ.

SERVE CHRIST

St. Vincent de Paul

We want to acknowledge and thank the Foothill Presbyterian Church Outreach Committee for their thoughtful contribution to our pantry. After reaching out to us to inquire about our needs, they collected from their church members a variety of toiletry items for St Vincent de Paul. We are most appreciative of them collaborating with us to help serve the less fortunate in our community.

Food items still in need: soup, cereal, canned fruit, and spam.

Thank you for your continued support!

ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEAL

Your support of the Annual Diocesan Appeal supports the works of the entire Diocese of San Jose which is the Catholic Church of Santa Clara. This includes works such as our Upper Room Community for Catholic Young Professionals. Here is a greeting from Jon and Britta Martin, the coordinators of the Upper Room:

“Hello SJV, we are Jon & Britta Martin. Since moving to the Upper Room (Dec. 2022), the St. John Vianney community has welcomed and supported us in so many ways!

We believe God divinely connected us to Fr. Joe Kim when coming to San Jose, and meeting him was in line with what God had in store for us.

Since agreeing to help serve the Upper Room community, we've welcomed 12 new residents. From a variety of backgrounds, we have teachers, missionaries and several other Catholic professionals in different fields.

As a Christian community, we all freely agree to participate in house functions throughout the year. This includes praying together regularly, sharing a family meal once a month, and regularly connecting with our mentors, Fr. Phillip & Fr. Joe.

We were greatly blessed to be led in a retreat here at our residence by Fr. Jose Maria, and we journeyed through healing graces as a household; It was a powerful experience! We've grown through sharing faith, fellowship and supporting one another.

On a personal note, we had the great honor of being united in Holy Matrimony by Fr. Joe this past June. We are so grateful to him and the entire SJV community for all the support.

It has been an honor to encounter the Holy Spirit through each member of our Upper Room community, and we are excited to see how God continues to guide us. Thank you to everyone here at SJV for your warm welcome and continued support.”

The 2024 Annual Diocesan Appeal continues the ministry of our Bishop Cantu throughout the Diocese of San Jose, which is the Catholic Church in the County of Santa Clara. The Diocesan Pastoral Plan from our Diocesan Synod last year is the basis for all pastoral ministries in the next several years. Your support of the ADA is a support of spiritual renewal in our parish of Saint John Vianney and beyond. For those who have donated, thank you and we ask that you commit to the same amount this year. For those who have yet to donate, consider a $500 tax deductible commitment to the Gospel. Online donations can be made here

Pray for the successful building, electrical, and plumbing inspections. We are making progress! For those who would like to contribute to the chapel (monstrance, tabernacle, chairs) and bathroom (toilet, sink, baby changing station) click here, email our SJV75 Committee, or call the parish office. The final phase continues this summer with the construction of the plaza and new asphalt in the community center parking lot.

Stewardship @SJV

Our Sunday Offering for Sunday, April 28, 2024 was $12,941.00. The Stewardship Committee thanks all our households for meeting our short-term goal over the last couple months. We are achieving our goal because of your participation, which can be done here. It takes all of us to carry out the Mission of our Lord Jesus here at St John Vianney Parish and School.
