SOMBA Board Meeting Recap...
SOMBA held its board meeting on May 29 at Trellis, located at 981 Mission Street. The meeting featured updates on police staffing, street health initiatives, and supportive housing, with presentations from community leaders and city representatives, including Kathleen Silk of the San Francisco Department of Public Health and Mark Mazza from Department of Emergency Management.
Police Staffing
Board members discussed ongoing public safety concerns in South of Market. While crime has declined in many parts of San Francisco, challenges remain in SOMA. The San Francisco Police Department is currently operating with a significant staffing shortage, estimated at approximately 700 officers citywide. With the recent expansion of Southern Station's service area, from Market Street through Mission Bay and surrounding neighborhoods, SFPD representatives indicated that efforts are underway to increase staffing levels in the district.
Street Health Services
Kathleen Silk, Director of the Street Crisis Response Team and Street-Based & Justice-Involved Behavioral Health Services at the Department of Public Health and Mark Mazza from Department of Emergency Management, provided an update on the Homeless Outreach Team (HOT). They shared that services in the area are expanding, including increased access to psychiatric and behavioral health support for unhoused individuals facing mental health and substance use challenges.
Supportive Housing and Fair Housing Complaint
Board member Leah Edwards provided an update on the fair housing complaint filed by the SOMA West Neighborhood Association with the State of California. The complaint alleges that the City has disproportionately concentrated high-need social services in SOMA while failing to provide the public safety, sanitation, and infrastructure resources necessary to support those services.
SOMBA has submitted a letter in support of the complaint, emphasizing the impact this imbalance has on small businesses, pedestrian activity, and future housing development in the neighborhood.
The complaint remains under state review. In the meantime, SOMBA continues to advocate for a more equitable distribution of services throughout the city, along with increased investments in public safety, sanitation, and neighborhood infrastructure.
Community support remains important. If you have not yet signed the petition, please consider doing so. If you have already signed, we encourage you to share it with a neighbor, colleague, or fellow business owner.

Congratulations to Casa Sofia on a successful & joyous ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening celebration!
It was wonderful to see such a strong turnout from community members, city officials, and local leaders, including San Francisco Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Rodney Fong, who joined in commemorating this exciting milestone.
A special thank-you to Chef Carlos and his wife, Shu, for the outstanding selection of Latin-American fusion hors d’oeuvres. Guests were treated to a delicious showcase of the restaurant’s unique culinary vision. It was also especially touching to hear remarks from their daughter, Sofia, for whom the restaurant is named.
The event beautifully reflected Casa Sofia’s family-centered spirit, offering guests an evening filled with exceptional food, handcrafted cocktails, and a welcoming atmosphere. We wish the entire Casa Sofia team continued success as they embark on this exciting new chapter.
