August is National Immunization Awareness Month!
Time to Start Thinking about Influenza Vaccination
|
The best way to protect yourself against influenza (flu) and its potentially serious complications is to get a flu vaccine. The CDC recommends that “almost everyone 6 months of age and older get a seasonal flu vaccine each year by the end of October. However, as long as flu viruses are circulating, vaccination should continue throughout flu season, even into January or later.” Flu vaccination is especially important for adults 65 years and older because they are at a higher risk of developing serious complications from flu due in part to changes in immune defenses with increasing age.
While the severity of flu seasons vary, adults 65 years and older bear the greatest burden of severe flu disease. 50-70% of seasonal-flu related hospitalizations have occurred among adults 65 years and older. This year, it is especially important to receive a flu shot to help decrease the number of flu-related hospitalizations in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beginning September 11, 2020, the Wellness Center will be accepting appointments for their annual free flu shot clinic. To follow the guidelines set forth by the CDC for social distancing, there will be two dates (October 6 & October 20) this year to accommodate the residents receiving the 500 free doses of flu vaccine that will be donated by Northwestern Medicine. Appointments are required. Walk-ins will not be accepted this year.
The 2020-2021 influenza vaccines have been updated from last year’s vaccine to better match circulating influenza viruses.
For any questions or concerns, contact the Wellness Center at 847-515-2078 and do not hesitate to get your flu shot this year.
