Virginia Main Street Webinar: Strategy-Driven Programming

Change is an important guiding principle for Main Street, but rather than letting change just happen, local Main Street programs need to know how to define and manage it from one year to the next through a strategy-driven work plan and aligned implementation process. Learn more below!

Virginia Main Street Webinar:

Strategy-Driven Programming

As part of Virginia Main Street's (VMS) "Switch to Six" training series, which provides VMS community professionals and volunteers with an in-depth understanding of the new Main Street America (MSA) Accreditation Standards through real community examples and stories from across the network, join us on Thursday, July 13 from 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM as

Kathy La Plante, Senior Program Officer and

Director of Coordinating Program Services, shares her expertise around Strategy-Driven Programming, the fourth MSA Community Accreditation Standard.

In this webinar, we'll focus on intentional change as a guiding principle. This accreditation standard dives into work planning, direction, and implementation rather than letting change just happen. Standard Four (Strategy-Driven Programming) brings together all integrated components that must be in place to plan and successfully implement revitalization work.

Exploring Main Street Community Interchange

On Wednesday, June 21 from 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM, the VMS team will host a Community Interchange event for Exploring Main Street (EMS) communities! This virtual gathering will focus on strengthening the program's network of community leaders and boosting Main Street efficacy in communities.

At this Interchange event, Tracy Hale Clark, Executive Director for the Louisa County Chamber of Commerce and Louisa Forward Foundation, will speak about the positive changes happening within the Town of Louisa. There will also be additional time for attendees to connect about the great revitalization work that's taking place across all EMS communities.

If you're an active EMS community, join us for June's Community Interchange as we provide an opportunity for peer support, solution-based discussions and fostering connections between communities. We look forwarding to seeing you there!

Virginia Main Street Hosts Regional Rev Up Workshops in Fredericksburg, Altavista & Bristol

Last month, the VMS team held three immersive half-day workshops in Fredericksburg, Altavista and Bristol that delved deep into Main Street America's (MSA) third Accreditation Standard,

Diverse Funding & Sustainable Program Operations. As part of the VMS program's "Switch to Six" series, these in-person workshops, which were led by Jennifer Goldman, focused on funding best practices, diverse funding streams and work plan-aligned budgeting. In total, 93 people attended the VMS Regional Rev Up events and walked away with a lot of great tips and information to take back to their respective local Main Street programs.

A special recording of Jennifer Goldman's presentation will be available soon, and we look forward to our next round of Rev Ups, which will be focused on preservation-based economic development, in September 2023. Stay tuned for more details!

Longwood University Students Help Farmville's Local Main Street Program Strengthen Fundraising Efforts, Build Community and Promote Downtown

Seeking to develop stronger connections between downtown Farmville and anchoring educational institutions, particularly Longwood University (LU), Farmville Downtown Partnership (FDP) partnered with students from Dr. Alec Hosterman's COMM 430 - Public Relations Campaigns class to create project-based work plans that help the organization friend-raise and fundraise.

Winchester Adds Art to Its Streets

As part of an ongoing streetscape improvement project on Piccadilly Street, the City of Winchester has turned street parking spaces into parklets designed by local artists. Arte Libre VA, a local nonprofit that works to empower Latinx, Black, and Youth of Color through equitable access to quality arts education and programming, was a major partner for the project. A total of 12 parklets were completed over the course of multiple weekends n 2022. The parking space murals were so popular that they will be installing another 12 this spring on the other side of Piccadilly Street.
