Pastor-to-People
Christians are called to be the "light of the world," and the "salt of the earth." Remember that Jesus said that even as the Roman Empire ruled over most of the Mediterranean world. In fact, Israel then was an occupied territory of Rome, with something of a puppet government headed by the Herod family. Yet, Jesus still called his followers to "let your light so shine that others may give glory to God".
So here we are in the 21st Century in the United States of America. What does Jesus' calling ask of us now? That's what we will be exploring in the next two Adult CE opportunities August 17 and 31. This coming Sunday I will be joined by one of the best students I have ever had at UNM. His name is John San Nicolas, who specializes in what he calls on his blog site "Faithful Politics." What does a faithful Christian do in our democratic society, where we elect our own representatives to govern us? We live in a
far different world than Jesus and Paul faced. Are there some different obligations we have as opposed to the First Century? I will be introducing A Social Creed for the 21st Century (please scroll to page 8) passed by the General Assembly in 2008. I will try to explain how the General Assembly makes pronouncements about all sorts of social issues and what that means for us. I will also be introducing a book by Jim Wallis called God's Politics.
So I invite you to come this Sunday and think together about what it means for us in our times to be the "light of the world" and "salt of the earth."
Blessings,
Frank
