The Elk Rapids Village Council recommends everyone read the MDHHS press release regarding Halloween. The Council suggests households choosing not to participate in handing out candy keep their porch light off, while those that choose to participate put their porch light on—to serve as a signal for trick-or-treaters. In the downtown River Street business district, trick-or-treaters are asked to travel one-way on sidewalks, rather than criss-crossing River Street. Antrim County High Tea for Breast Cancer

Mission: Our primary focus is to assist all individuals living within Antrim County who are not otherwise covered by public or private medical programs or whose personal financial capability would discourage preventative testing.
Until 2009, Antrim County had the highest breast cancer mortality rate in Michigan. Since then, the rate has dropped 36% and we now rank 47th out of 83 counties. Based on current data we can expect 17-19 incidents and 2-4 breast cancer deaths each year. So, while great progress has been made in reducing the mortality rates, we still have a significant challenge in front of us. So, if you need help, or advice, help with care or more, please reach out to us. We’re to help!

Have you noticed the Chain of Lakes Water Trail signs in the ground near your favorite water access? Maybe you have seen them from the road or from the water and wondered what they are. Getting these signs in the ground was a huge undertaking and a massive milestone for Paddle Antrim. They have written blog post with a brief explanation of the three different types of water trail signs that can be found throughout the trail, their purpose, and the value they bring to paddlers and the general public. Click here to read.
Fearless Paddle Antrim Leader ~ Deana Jerdee
As temperatures in Northern Michigan are cooling down, Paddle Antrim warns paddlers to take precautions to protect themselves from heightened dangers of sudden, unexpected cold water immersion while on late season paddling outings.

“The trees are changing color and taking fall paddles provides some of the most beautiful scenery in Michigan but the water is getting cold. Paddlers need to take extra steps to protect themselves from the dangers of being suddenly swamped or stranded in cold water,” warns Deana Jerdee, Paddle Antrim Executive Director.

Right now water temperatures are about 60 degrees and dropping, therefore a wetsuit or a full immersion drysuit with insulating layers is necessary........... Continue Reading

Hello TARTans,
This summer you probably noticed that your favorite trail felt, well, really busy. Same with the parks and beaches all around us. You were right. Our region experienced a huge uptick in trail use. Trailheads were overflowing as people got on their bikes and laced up their shoes, flocking to the trails to safely get out and get active. It is clear trails and public lands play a critical role in supporting our health and happiness. And we're super excited to be working on getting more trails on the ground and keeping them looking great. We want to make sure everyone in our region has access to safe and enjoyable ways to stay active and healthy. Continue Reading

Date: October 17, 2020

Meet our most recent donation to the Center. Newly named “Sandy Sticker”, a crested gecko was donated this week and is looking forward to greeting visitors, when Raven Hill officially opens next spring or whenever the pandemic allows. Native to New Caledonia, a French territory in the southwest Pacific Ocean, the crested gecko is one of many unique animals, especially birds and plants, found there. This little cutie is an omnivore, consuming both insects and fruits. It loves to climb and can live 10 to 20 years! We look forward to learning more about our new friend...Continue Reading Update on October 17, 2020

Like many other events cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rotary Club of Elk Rapids has been forced to cancel two of its’ long-running annual fund-raising events; the Rotary Show and the Harbor Days Chicken BBQ. But, the cancellation of these events doesn’t mean the Rotary Club of Elk Rapids isn’t still committed to partnering with you to raise funds for its’ Good Works Fund.

Listed are the 2019-2020 Good Works Fund grant recipients. Thanks to your past support, these organizations have been able to provide valuable services to those in need. Now, more than ever, these organizations need continued financial assistance.

Please consider making a gift/sponsorship to the Good Works Fund knowing that any amount you give will support community well being during these difficult times.

As a THANK YOU for your generosity, your business name will be featured in the Elk Rapids News, Facebook and on the Rotary Club of Elk Rapids website.

For the first time in 130 years, The Salvation Army is starting its annual holiday fundraising campaign early across the country in order to rescue Christmas. The funds raised through the organization's iconic red kettles are at risk this year due to COVID-19 while requests for services are at an all-time high.

The Village Market Giving Tree is just around the corner!

After a lot of thought, we are doing things a little different this year due to the Corona Virus pandemic that has happened…We will be taking monetary donations ONLY this year. We are doing this because we are not supposed to have things coming and going, in and out of the store. So, our plan is to collect money, divide the total by the number of children and order everything proportionately online and have it shipped directly to each child’s home.

We, also, will not be putting up a tree with tags this year. We understand that so many individuals like to shop themselves but we are just unable to do that this year. We feel that this is the best solution to still be able to help the children and not have to cancel the program completely.
In ending, we would need all donations by November 1st, this will give us ample time to get forms turned in and gifts ordered. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 231-264-5629, ext. 6.

Thank You in advance for your consideration…J

To Donate: Go to your local Village Market and see the cashier for your monetary donation. They are able to add it to your order or you can make checks payable to The Village Market and “The Giving Tree” should be on the memo line.

If you’re in need of assistance: The forms are ONLY at the Village Markets, (Elk Rapids, Rapid City & Central Lake). They will NOT be handed out through the schools this year. This program is for individuals that need a little help at Christmas. All children up to the age of 18, (as long as they are enrolled in school), are eligible.

Merry Christmas!
