Dear Neighbor:

It has been almost two years since COVID-19 started ravaging our City. While we still have a long way to go, I would like to take this time to thank you for your trust in re-electing me as your Council Member to guide our community to a just and equitable recovery from the pandemic.

Since I was first elected, I have supported numerous food pantries throughout the district so that we could put food directly into the hands of our neighbors. I advocated for and hosted mobile vaccination events and locations in the district. I provided millions of dollars for our schools, hospitals, parks, and more. I also funded organizations that provide a range of programs from arts and music to helping guide our small business through these challenging times, as well as mental health services.

In the NYC Council, most of our legislative work happens in committee meetings and hearings where we discuss proposed laws, receive updates from agencies, and hear feedback from New Yorkers like you. In my short time in the Council, I am proud to have co-sponsored 86 pieces of legislation, 52 of which passed the Council.

For a deeper dive into legislation, click here.

In addition, my very first bill, Int. 2354, was passed unanimously during the Stated meeting on December 9th. This bill recognizes that all service members and veterans, including those who received less than honorable discharge status, are entitled to city services. Many of our veterans were discharged with other than honorable status due to their LGBTQ status, skin color, actions stemming from PTSD, and even pregnancy. Veterans in New York City have the opportunity for support with discharge status upgrades, which may provide them with the dignity they earned through their service, as well as federal benefits. My bill also adds two members to the Veterans Advisory board, who will come from family members of veterans.

These laws will not only strengthen our city, but allow us to be a model for transformative and accountable government. I thank you for the opportunity to fight for our community and ensure that your voice is heard in City Hall.

Moving forward, I strongly encourage you to reach out to my office if there are any concerns or issues in the neighborhood.

Community Updates

Homeless Shelter

Since September, our community has been aware of the proposed homeless shelter at 6661 Broadway. Hundreds of you have also reached out to my office to share your thoughts, and hundreds others attended local community board meetings, all of which I attended. I continue to be engaged in this process.

I want to be clear: I do NOT support this plan. It is a $195 million contract for services that are mostly unknown, in a building that has no design, with little to no community input.

Constituent Casework

The Henry Hudson footbridge has been in disrepair for some time. I brought the Bronx Borough Commissioner of the Department of Transportation (DOT) for a walkthrough so he could see firsthand the condition of the footbridge.

With our determined advocacy, we were able to get the steps repainted so that pedestrians are better guided when using the stairs. My office continues to advocate for further improvements such as additional lighting and beautification.

If there are other areas in the neighborhood in disrepair, please inform our office so we can address it.

A constituent had been waiting for his Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) reimbursement for 2020, while all of his friends had received it.

Our office reached out to the Office of Labor Relations (OLR) to get to the bottom of the issue. We found out that the constituent’s union did not forward the documents to OLR, but because of our intervention, the constituent has now received his much needed and well-earned reimbursement.

A constituent’s senior metrocard got eaten up by a metrocard machine all the way in South Queens. She was fearful that she would lose all of her money that she had on her card.

Our office got in contact with the MTA and they were able to send her a replacement containing the full balance.

As a taxpayer, our City should be working for YOU!

Neighborhood Beautification

Maintaining the quality of life in our neighborhood is of the utmost importance. That’s why I have allocated over $300,000 to organizations that keep our neighborhood clean, and secured new rat-proof garbage cans for some commercial corridors. From litter pick-ups to graffiti removal, landscaping to snow removal, look for our crews out on the streets keeping our neighborhood clean. You may have even seen me around the neighborhood with a broom or even planting daffodils!

Please reach out to my office if there are areas that need to be worked on or if you need help hosting a neighborhood beautification event.
