Always Appreciating What's Good...

January 2012

Company of Experts Consulting Services

Have you made your New Years Resolution yet?

In November, I had the great opportunity to work with an NGO in Eastern Africa. What a team! They work long hours and face circumstances that are unimaginable to so many of us.  The caring, compassion and commitment is not only to the people they work with but also to each other. The amazing energy of their offices, their conversations and of their playful times was a joy to behold. The chief executive officer and human resources director are immensely caring and passionate people who recognize that time together is finite and how we live each moment refects upon us, upon our soul. It is what brings us to the next level of our being. Knowing that the mind, body connection is so intregal to each employees well-being, they have twice weekly yoga and salsa dancing. Their office space is open and light-filled, lunch is provided each day. Participation is all voluntary but the space for joining together and reflection is within reach and encouraged.

On the long flight home, I made my resolution to spend more time in the moment and more time with the people and things that mean so much to me.  Some energizing moments will just happen. Others will require planning and scheduling.  I need to keep my energy open for those moments and seize them. I also need to create the space and make it happen. Both/and.

Today, was one of those both/and times for us in the office. While I will not compare our work to that of my friends in Eastern Africa, we have some similiarities in our sense of the world and our place in it. I had made a commitment to provide space for more play and reflection at work. One of those fun things is Friday Film Fest. Suddenly, the calendar filled up - and it looked like the first fest may fizzle. Creatively reconfiguring the calendar we were able to fulfill our commitment to others and enjoy our film.

Wishing you a joyful year,

2012 World Appreciative Inquiry Conference (WAIC)
Ghent, Belgium ~ April 25 - 28, 2012

Over two decades ago David Cooperrider and Suresh Srivastva brought Appreciative Inquiry into organizational life. It shifted our attention from organizational life as "a problem-to-be-solved", to "a universe-of-strengths". One decade later Gallup unveiled the results of its landmark research study amongst 1.5 million people worldwide. The research confirmed the basic AI principle: a person, an organization or a larger system will excel only by knowing and amplifying strengths, never by fixing weaknesses.

Since then many people and organizations around the world have shifted their attention to strengths-based practices and leadership. This has led to breathtaking results and breakthroughs. The community of people applying AI at all levels or organizational and social life is growing continuously. Not limited by sector or continent. AI is a true global innovation. AI is changing the way that we look at change.

The World Appreciative Inquiry Conference is held every three years. The last decade, the conference was held three times in the US and lately in Kathmandu, Nepal (2009). In April 2012, it will be organized in Europe for the first time in history. The marvelous city of Ghent (Belgium) will set the scenery for this event.

'No Child Left Behind' Celebrates its 10th Birthday. Good? Bad? Indifferent?
One small question - one great response...

By: Melissa Robaina, Company of Experts

Earlier this week I came across an article written by Sol Stern, an author for The Daily Beast, titled, "Still 'Lying to Children': How No Child Left Behind Corrupted Education". In the article, Stern discusses the "No Child Left Behind Act" (NCLB) - enacted 10 years ago this week. He states that, "Expecting all students to be college ready is a hopeless utopian goal that inevitably produces test-score inflation and bad results".

Jim Pulliam, the Vice President of Company of Experts and a former community college president, is passionate about student learning - which inspired him to establish Distance Edu Learning, the software company responsible for developing Fintelo, a content management system. When developing Fintelo, Jim ensured that the software would engage students by allowing the learner to construct their own learning based on their individual learning styles. In addition, the software has included intended learning outcomes within each lesson of a course - providing learners an increased awareness of what is required of them and allows teachers to evaluate and enhance their own teaching and curriculum. As I read the article, I was curious what Jim's thoughts on the issue would be. In an email, I sent him a link to the online article I found and wrote, "This week celebrated the 10th anniversary of No Child Left behind. Sol Stern writes that the landmark law has corrupted education. What do you think?" His reply is as follows:

The World Cafe: Shaping our Futures Through Conversations that Matter

By: Jaunita Brown & David Isaacs

Description: The World Cafe process has been used by tens of thousands of people around the world to tackle real-life issues. Based on seven key principles, it begins with small, intimate conversations at cafe-style tables; these gatherings then link and build on each other as people move between groups and cross-pollinate ideas. In this way, Cafe learning enables even very large groups to think together creatively in a single, connected conversation. This book provides readers with the tools needed to get started. Each chapter opens with stories from business, education, government, and community organizations demonstrating how leaders are using this process in the real world. Such stories underline the Cafe's immediate, practical implications for meeting and conference design, strategy formation, knowledge creation, and large-scale systems change.
