Letting Go
Service Leader:
Donna Featherston
In the Zen tradition, there's a saying that Zen mind is a beginner's mind. Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Roshi said, "In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few." As we take on our monthly theme of new beginnings, let's explore what it means to let go. Whether it's unhelpful thoughts, unskillful behaviors, or ways of being that do not serve us well, let's consider how we let go-- to begin again, in love.

Inquirers Newcomer Group
Sundays, 11:45 am

Inquirers is offered on most Sundays, as a place for newcomers to connect, learn about UUCP how this can be a congregational home for you.

This Sunday: Katie Resendiz, Children's Ministry Director, will discuss how young folks grow in community at UUCP.
Inquirers will be held in Annex G.
Greetings from Rev. Christine Dance
Hello community members of UUCP,
I am here on my second day as your newly called minister of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix. I am going to be spending a lot of my first days figuring out the basics—how our phone system works, which keys go to which doors and things like that. But I am also jumping right in and setting up meetings with key individuals and committees, addressing pastoral care concerns and most of all, starting to work and delight in our amazing staff.
You can reach me via the minister’s email address, which is . Or you can reach me through my contact information that you find below. Very soon, I’ll be sending out a link so that you can see when I’ll be available for meetings at UUCP—please feel free to schedule one and help me to get to know you and whatever projects you’ve been working on around here.

I will be spending these first few months learning everything I possibly can about UUCP.  Don’t expect any big decisions from me during this time—it’s just learning!  We will be continuing our summer worship led by lay leaders and my first Sunday in the pulpit will be on September 8th with our Water Communion.  But my wife Karen and I will be at Sunday services starting this Sunday—please introduce yourself to me—possibly several times!
I look forward to meeting with you, working with you, exploring what it means to be human and connected with you.

Becoming A Safer Congregation - Active Shooter Training

We are constantly reminded that the world can be a dangerous and unpredictable place. The Safe Congregation Team will be presenting “Active Shooter Training” Sunday August 4th from 12:00-1:00 pm. This will be a tabletop slideshow presentation, with a video and conversation afterward.   (Note: we will  not  be conducting any surprise, simulated Active Shooter/Lockdown drills at UUCP).  Adults (18 and over, or under 18 if a COA graduate) are encouraged to attend one of these sessions. Childcare will be provided. Contact Jan Kaplan if you have any questions.
Maryland School

Our community partner, Maryland School, will be back in session on August 5. Visit today to see how you can help and bring in supplies this Sunday.

Sacred Harp Singing

Experience the Sacred Harp, a unique American singing tradition! UUCP is pleased to host Phoenix Fasola, who welcomes newcomers, beginners, and listeners to join them. Sacred Harp, also known as "shape-note," is a participatory style in which singers sit in a square facing in. The music itself has roots in 18th-century U.S. Protestantism, but singers of many backgrounds and beliefs find Sacred Harp to be a spiritual experience. More information at

Parenting + Community = Challenge Accepted
Service Leader: Mikall Foerster

How does a parent work through the challenges of parenting, especially in these increasingly complex times? Community plays an important role in that process.

Inquirers Newcomer Group
Next Sunday Katie Ventura will lead a discussion about covenants and how they are used at UUCP. Inquirers will be held in Annex B at 11:45.
Lay Pastoral Care Associates
Why should UUCP want a Lay Pastoral Care Ministry? Sometimes, each of us needs more than just words of encouragement or a hug from a friend, and in a congregation our size it is not always possible for the minister to provide pastoral care for each congregant in need. This is especially true with care that is required over an extended period of time. The Lay Pastoral Care Associates will extend this ministry for Rev. Dance and provide a confidential, caring presence to congregants during stressful life transitions. Stay tuned for more information on how this team will support UUCP in the near future.

Construction Update
The irrigation for the plants around the northwest parking lot is being installed. The parking lot shape is visible with curbs poured. Asphalt should be laid by early August.

The back hallway entrance is closed for construction, so if you park on 40th Place or in the Christ Church back lot, you can get to our main building via the gently sloped desert from the south of our buildings, or walk down 40th Place to Lincoln Drive and then use the sidewalk to get to our main parking lot. While the upper parking lot is CLOSED, the accessible entrance is the ramped south door that you get to via the path on the left (south) side of the building from the main parking lot.
