Service Leader: Rev. Christine Dance and Right Relations Team

Unitarian Universalism is a "Covenantal Tradition." What does that mean? What are we covenanting to do together? Why does it matter? And why is it so hard sometimes? Members of our Right Relations Team will join us as we explore covenants in general as well as our UUCP Covenant.

Meet and Greet Past UUCP Minister Rev. Fritz Hudson
Rev. Fritz Hudson was the minister at UUCP from 1991 to 1998. Now, 22 years later, he will be here on Sunday February 23rd and we have an opportunity to greet him again - or meet him for the first time. Please join us between services to share a handshake or a hug!
Memorial Services
Sadly, we have two deaths and Memorial Services in our community.
  • Sunday, February 23rd at 5pm is the service for Alice S. Williamson. Alice was a member here at UUCP for decades. She was passionate about politics, gardening, and her family.
  • Saturday, February 29th at 10am is the service for Nik Votichenko—the son of UUCP Members Peter Votichenko and grandson of Helen Votichenko, who died suddenly and too-young last Sunday. Nik leaves a young daughter and a loving family and so many friends.

Civic Engagement

The Phoenix City Council is meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 2:30pm to vote on creating a civilian oversight board for the Phoenix Police Department. In 2018, there were more shootings by Phoenix police than in any other major US city. Some measures have been taken since then, but Phoenix is the largest city in the country without independent oversight of police. We will have two action items at the table Sunday:
  • Sign a group letter to Mayor Kate Gallego expressing our support for the creation of a civilian oversight board that would have investigative power, and
  • Postcards for Phoenix residents to write to their City Council members saying the same thing. We can help you find your member and give you contact info to use in the future. The cards and letter will be hand-delivered on Monday morning.
You can find your council member here if you would prefer to email them:

Order items needed at the Welcome Center for asylum-seekers at . Most needed: jackets, underwear and socks for kids, adult size small. Info at the back table.
Earth Justice Ministry
Earth Justice Ministry urges you to follow Janine Gelsinger's (UUJAZ) advice of developing a spiritual practice of making your voice heard in our AZ and Fed Legislatures as bills are being heard. Right to Speak makes it easy. Stop by the Civic Engagement table for the most updated bills that need your attention. Also, ask how you can get Melinda Merkel Iyer's weekly newsletter.

Green Tip: Buy as much as you can second hand. You intentionally recycle or reuse when you do this.
Blue Tip: Monitor your water bill for spikes or unusually high usage. You may find you have a leak or two this way.
Diet for a small planet tip: Eating a plant-rich diet and reducing or eliminating animal foodstuffs reduces global mortality rates from 6-10%.

Resistance and Transformation:
UU Social Justice History
Six Sessions: Thursdays, March 26 through May 7 (not including April 9th ), from 7-9 pm

Grounded in the belief that even “failures” in our history can be instructive, this program presents the ongoing struggle of our tradition to live up to its ever-evolving ideals of social transformation. Themes include abolition, peace-making, civil rights, free speech, utopianism, counter-culture, the women’s movements of both 19th and 20th centuries, sexuality education, and LGBT equality.

Led by Debbie Westwood: Originally from England where she attended a traditional evangelical church, Debbie has lived in Phoenix for five years and in North American for more than 20 years. She has a passion for learning and adult education, currently with a particular interest in spirituality, social justice and intersectionality.

Sunday March 1
The Congregational Photo will be taken at 11am sharp, between services on Sunday March 1. Hope to see everyone there!
Trio del Fuego Concert
On Sun. March 1 at 2:00pm, our spring stewardship drive will begin with an innovative string trio concert of tangos, classical and world music in our sanctuary! Spirituality of Ageing Small Group
This new small group (or covenant group) has just been formed as forum for discussion about our attitudes toward our ageing and is seeking additional participants. We will use the short chapters of the book, The Gift of Years by Joan Chittister as topics for each month's discussion. The group will meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month (currently thru May) in Annex B from 2:45 to 4:15 PM. If you are interested, please contact John Wilber at .
Outdoor Group Events

Saturday hike changed to February 29 due to weather!
Meet up at 8:00 am
Join us for a hike in Cave Creek Regional Park on the Go John Trail. This is a moderate to difficult hike that is through some of the prettiest desert Arizona has to offer. The poppies are already starting to bloom! You may see a few other hardy specimens of our wildflowers beginning to show up as you hike this trail that is known for its showy wildflower season.

We will be having a spring campout at Lost Dutchman State Park March 27 through 29. The group sites are not available; however, there are individual sites still available. This campground does fill up; so if you are planning on attending you may want to make your reservation sooner rather than later. Ed and I have booked site 107. We will be arriving on Thursday, March 26 and departing on Sunday, March 29. Further information will be forthcoming as the date draws near. In the meantime, if you have any questions please  email the Outdoor Group . See

Beatles Community Choir
Temple Kol Ami in Scottsdale invites you to participate in a new and vibrant community-wide multifaith program -- a multifaith choir , designed to connect us with our neighbors -- to appreciate our similarities and differences -- while celebrating togetherness and community through music and prayer.
On Friday , May 15, 2020 we will be hosting a very non-traditional Shabbat service entitled “Shabbat: With a Little Help from Our Friends,” where our multifaith choir will perform traditional Hebrew prayers to the beloved music of the Beatles. We will have a professional band, a volunteer multifaith choir and a whole lot of fun.
To participate in the choir, you do not need to be able to read Hebrew or have any singing or musical background. You just have to love music (particularly the music of the Beatles) and want to spread joy through song!
The commitment is eleven rehearsals, with one rehearsal per week starting Thursday, February 27 th . The multifaith choir is also intergenerational and open to anyone 16 years of age or older.

To join the choir, please register at
Next Sunday, March 1

This is a new cooperative group for UUs of all ages who are neurodiverse and want to create a community of care, support, and accountability. We will be looking at the systems we have in place for spiritual goals such as "making the joy and love around me feel more accessible," or "identify my truth and meaning in my life."(4th principle).
Life is hard sometimes. You are not Alone.
