Don’t Miss Out—Before This Sunday:
Traveling 2 nd Fridays—Friday February 14th
United Arab Emirates (Dubai and Abu Dhabi)
by Barbara Cawthorne
Dubai is a global city and business hub in the Middle East. It was a fishing village in the early 18th century. Oil revenue helped the development of the city, however Dubai’s current oil production levels are low; less than 5% of the Emirate’s revenue comes from oil. Today, Dubai’s economy relies on revenues from: trade, tourism, aviation, real estate, and financial services. Abu Dhabi is the country’s center of political and industrial activities, and a major cultural and commercial center, due to it being the capital.

If you have any questions about Traveling 2nd Fridays, call Barbara Cawthorne at (480) 994-1452. Join us for this one-hour presentation and everyone is welcome!

Remember: Mark your calendars for the 2nd Friday of each month from January through May.
Service Leader: Katie Resendiz and Children’s Ministries

If you deconstructed the songs we share, the music that plays softly in the background, and the words of our favorite pop songs, what would you discover? Is there power in being a "humming UU?" For the month of January, the children at UUCP have been diving into music using their amazing media literacy skills. Come sing with us.

Civic Engagement

Day at the Legislature is coming! On President’s Day Monday, Feb. 17 from 11am to 1pm, UUs will meet their legislators face to face. Personally meeting representatives is the most powerful way to share your personal stories and passions, and doing it with others makes it less intimidating by far!

It’s not too late to sign up at and come to our 30-minute training on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 12:30 in Annex B to help you feel comfortable with this process that promotes our UU values. Find your legislative district and legislators at or at the back table.

Order items needed at the Welcome Center for asylum-seekers at . Most needed: jackets, underwear and socks for kids, adult size small. Info at the back table.
at  or at the back table. Find out which legislative district you are in at .

Request to Speak
There will be a training on how to speak to your representatives on Sunday, Feb. 16 from 12:30-1:15.
Earth Justice Ministry
Earth Justice Ministry urges you to follow Janine Gelsinger's (UUJAZ) advice to develop a Civic Engagement spiritual practice of making your
voice heard in our AZ and Federal Legislatures as bills are being heard. Right to Speak makes it easy. There are many involving water, but these three stand out: HB2758 watershed health and SB1465 ecological water: HB2158 and SB1405 about well metering: and HB2159 and SB1385 about water adequacy. Please pick up the more extensive Sierra Club list and
recommendations on the EJM table.

Green Tip: Get to know your legislators and make sure your UU values are
heard by them.
Blue Tip: Make time for letting legislators know your position on above
(and other) bills.
Diet for a Small Planet Tip: When planning to go out to eat with friends, try a vegan restaurant for a change. There is protein in vegetables even without tofu.

UU Social Justice History
Six Sessions: Thursdays, March 26 through May 7 (not including April 9th ), from 7-9 pm

Grounded in the belief that even “failures” in our history can be instructive, this program presents the ongoing struggle of our tradition to live up to its ever-evolving ideals of social transformation. Themes include abolition, peace-making, civil rights, free speech, utopianism, counter-culture, the women’s movements of both 19th and 20th centuries, sexuality education, and LGBT equality.

Led by Debbie Westwood: Originally from England where she attended a traditional evangelical church, Debbie has lived in Phoenix for five years and in North American for more than 20 years. She has a passion for learning and adult education, currently with a particular interest in spirituality, social justice and intersectionality.

Spirituality of Ageing Small Group

Outdoor Group Events

Saturday was another glorious day to be out on the trail. A chilly start warmed up quickly as we ascended South Mountain to test our girth at Fat Man's Pass. The pictures tell the story. Thank you, Mark Stambaugh , for leading this fun group. We even had Stephanie and Todd Haughton with Cooper down from Flagstaff to join in on the fun. That is always a plus! As you can see from the pictures, it truly is a bit of a squeeze to get through the pass. What a fun scramble over big rocks and through tight spaces!

The Farm is always a go-to place for a great meal when at South Mountain. Most of us continued the conversation and community over lunch in a beautiful shady pecan grove with the sun lacing through the leaves. We have a few hikes left this season! You will want to get them on your calendar. Shared community like Saturday are truly precious!

The next hike will be February 22 in Cave Creek Regional Park on the Go John Trail. This is a moderate to difficult hike that is through some of the prettiest desert Arizona has to offer. The poppies are already starting to bloom! You may see a few other hardy specimens of our wildflowers beginning to show up as you hike this trail that is known for its showy wildflower season. Thus Do We Covenant
Service Leader: Rev. Christine Dance with assistance from the Right Relations Team

Unitarian Universalism is a "Covenantal Tradition." What does that mean? What are we covenanting to do together? Why does it matter? And why is it so hard sometimes? Members of our Right Relations Team will join us as we explore covenants in general as well as our UUCP Covenant.

Music: Woodwinds, Mary Cota

February Theme: Resilience
