Hello Compass Center Friends,

We hope this newsletter finds you well.

We've had a fantastic month filled with new programs, fundraisers, and collaborations with our community partners.  In this newsletter, you'll hear about some of February's highlights, including our well-attended Family Law Clinics and the financial information sessions we hosted in partnership with the Family Success Alliance.

For the entire month of March we're celebrating  Women's History Month. Compass Center is co-hosting two events at Flyleaf Books and spreading the word about other local events to commemorate the month. Please see our calendar below.

We also wanted to let you know that tickets to the Empowering Journeys Luncheon (our new Spring fundraiser) are on sale now. We hope you can join us!

Warm regards,

Cordelia Heaney

Programs in Action
Compass Center has been engaged in some exciting work. We recently hosted a Family Law Clinic and a Family Success Alliance event to support our clients.

Family Law Clinic
is an opportunity for clients to make a 45-minute appointment with a team consisting of an attorney and a law student. They can help answer questions about divorce, separation, child support, custody, and landlord-tenant issues. We would like to thank the lawyers and UNC law students who volunteered their day to participate in this new event. There was a great turnout and the information they provided was so helpful for the clients.

Family Success Alliance

The Family Success Alliance is a collective impact initiative to close the achievement gap and end generational poverty in Orange County, North Carolina. A diverse group of parents, elected officials, community organizations and government partners have come together to improve children's chances for educational and economic opportunities with a seamless "pipeline" of evidence-based programs, services, and supports from cradle to college and career.

As part of this initiative, Compass Center provided a 4-week  financial workshop series for families with practical information
around budgeting, savings, credit, and financial institutions. Dinner
and childcare  were provided. Workshops were conducted in both  English and Spanish to meet the community needs.

Thanks for Showing your Support!
Thanks to all of the board members, staff, volunteers, and community members who turned out for our fundraising events over the past few weeks.

The Steel String Brewery event on January 31 featured live performances from several local musicians and food from Napoli Food Truck.   Thank you to everyone who donated their time and talent to make this fundraiser come together.

The Fleet Feet Fun Run  in late February closed out the month with a 2-mile run followed by drinks at The Station .  Thank you to Brooks athletic clothing company for sponsoring the drinks! We feel so fortunate to have the support of so many local business and community members.

Women's History Month
Happy Women's History Month! This year, the national theme is "Nevertheless, She Persisted." It's a time to acknowledge the women throughout history who have persevered--despite the countless barriers--to live their destinies.

Compass Center is celebrating Women's History Month through a collaboration with Flyleaf Books.  On March 3, we hosted  Feminist Story Time with Mary Parry, author of  Sadie McGrady Runs for President.

On March 22, we will have a Women's Empowerment Fair from  6 to 8 p.m. Several Orange County nonprofits that work to empower women will be on hand to distribute literature about their organizations. Other events, including guest speakers and a film screening are listed below.
