Emergency Training Opportunities

As we mentioned last month, your Property Owners Association has secured the commitment of our County’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) in getting some emergency training from their professionals—Jim Krempel and Jorge Paucar.

Our first community-wide experience was the successful Weathering the Storm Zoom session, attended by over 18 Arundel on the Bay and Oyster Harbor neighbors on July 16. Jim and Jorge did an outstanding job of presenting some potentially life-saving information in only an hour. For those who couldn’t attend, (or couldn’t take notes fast enough) all of their slides, with the bazillion links they promised, are available as a homepage pick on our website. Other essential OEM info can be found on our emergency planning website page.

Now for step two—your opportunity to obtain, free, some absolutely lifesaving training that Jim mentioned last month such as:

  • “Hands-only” CPR/AED Training: 1.5 hours in-person only, up to 10 people per instructor
  • Stop the Bleed Training: 1.5 hours in-person only, up to 10 people per instructor
  • Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) Training: 1.5 hours in-person only, no size limit
  • Fire Extinguisher 101—It’s more than just point and shoot!
  • Narcan (Nalaxone) opioid overdose reversal drug administration class.

We’ve already had five neighbors express an interest in CPR/AED training, and two each for most of the rest. So if you wish to participate before all ten slots are filled for our first session on CPR/AED training, or want to reserve a space for any of the others, please contact David Delia as soon as possible and Jim and Jorge will secure a meeting room at the new Busch Library (1410 West Street), most likely for a Tuesday evening around 7pm. We’re also inviting our Oyster Harbor neighbors because who knows, the life they save may be one of ours, or vice versa!

Theater anyone?

Last year your Property Owners Association embarked upon another community-building activity—Theater With Your Neighbors—in conjunction with our friends at the Compass Rose Theater at their new Maryland Hall venue, and so far, it has become quite successful. About 15 of us attended each of two of their great plays—“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” and “The Gin Game.”

Several AOTB residents have been avid boosters of this totally professional, Actors’ Equity-certified theater group, featuring local as well as New York talent, since two of our then-AOTB neighbors started it up in 2011. Read more.

This season features a selection of four award-winning comedies, dramas, and a beloved musical with a bite: "Intimate Apparel," "Same Time, Next Year," "Proof," and "Little Shop of Horrors,” and AOTB’s new friend, the company’s Executive Director, Barbara Webber, is happy to offer us her assistance again this year.

We don’t yet have AOTB-specific dates set, but if you wish to join your neighbors, we’ll most likely be able to secure reservations in advance for our group, which also entails choice seating for “our” performances. Should you prefer to buy tickets for individual plays, your POA has secured a discount of about 10% for folks using promo code AOTB; geezers and military get their own discount. However, should you wish to subscribe, you’ll get an instant discount; then when we know which dates we can be together, we’ll get the word out as far in advance as possible and you can make your individual reservations online.

Please join us as we experience the emotional intensity and interpersonal development of live theater at this intimate, 80-seat theater, only 20 minutes away, near Westgate Circle at Maryland Hall, 801 Chase Street. And remember, theater isn’t just for adults either; student and kid rates are also available. It’s Showtime folks!
