I was at a doctor’s appointment yesterday. After it was over, I decided that four floors justified the elevator over the stairs.
Inside the elevator, I helped a woman push her husband’s wheelchair across the threshold. A man held the door. Another woman pushed the button. I made a comment, trying to clarify that the first floor was the exit. Everyone smiled and nodded, “Yes.”
And then—all of them said to me, “No, you don’t want this floor" … twice!
Obviously, I was distracted.
What I noticed in those brief moments together was how connected we were -helping one another in small, ordinary ways. The man in the wheelchair said, “In this dark time, we need to help each other. Be kind to one another.”
We all smiled, nodding solemnly.
As I exited the elevator—this time on the correct floor - I thanked them for being the light.
Join us.
