At 79, Stamford resident Michon is still adjusting to life in a new city. Having moved to the area just two years ago, navigating unfamiliar streets and public transportation has been a challenge—especially without a car. That’s where the JFS Compassionate Companions program has made a meaningful difference.

The program provides escorted transportation to essential medical appointments, helping older adults access the care they need. The service came at just the right time for Michon, as she began meeting with her new doctors.

“The appointments always take a long time, and getting there on my own just wasn’t realistic,” she shared. “The ride service has been a real help.”

What stands out most to Michon is the personal connection. She praised the attentive and thoughtful communication from staff—particularly Daniela, who coordinates scheduling—and the kindness and respect shown by the volunteers who accompany her.

“Meeting younger people has been a real treat,” she said. “They’re always caring, never condescending. It’s a pleasure interacting with them.”

JFS is proud to offer services like Compassionate Companions, ensuring that older adults in our community feel supported, respected, and never alone.

Last week, JFS hosted a Volunteer Breakfast at our Norwich office, located at Foundry 66. The event was a heartwarming gathering of community members, local leaders, and supporters—coming together to learn, connect, and get inspired.

Celebrating Community and Service

The breakfast provided a chance for attendees to:

-Learn more about JFS's mission and programs

-Discover meaningful volunteer opportunities

-Connect with others who care deeply about supporting refugees and strengthening community ties

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who attended and shared in our vision of service and support. Events like this show the power of community when we come together with purpose,” said Javid Siddiqi, JFS Director of Resettlement & Refugee Services.

We were honored to welcome special guests (pictured above):

  • Mayor Peter Nystrom, City of Norwich
  • Carrie Szymanski, 2023–2025 Club Secretary, Norwich Sunrise Rotary Club
  • Javid Siddiqi, JFS Director of Resettlement & Refugee Services

Their presence and words of encouragement remind us of the vital role collaboration plays in our success.

The Cultural Fair at Turn of River Middle School was a vibrant celebration of heritage, unity, and community spirit. With colorful displays, music, and traditions representing Indian, Haitian, and Jamaican cultures, the event highlighted the richness of our shared community.

JFS was proud to participate—sharing information about our programs and services, and building meaningful connections with attendees. It was a valuable opportunity to:

  • Promote cultural understanding and inclusion
  • Highlight our support of diverse communities
  • Engage with new friends and partners from across the region

“Events like this remind us that diversity is our strength,” said a JFS team member. “We’re honored to be part of it.”

We’re looking for volunteers/tutors who can dedicate two-hour blocks of time to help students via Google Meet. Students will log on to ask questions about subjects they need help with.

We’re especially looking for volunteers who speak Ukrainian or Haitian Creole.
