Color Me Happy
Adult coloring books provide surprising mental health benefits
Many of us have happy memories of spending time as young children coloring pictures. The brightness of crayons, the simplicity of the pictures, the single-mindedness of this activity-all these bring to mind childhood.
However, coloring doesn't have to be an activity kept in the past. Adult coloring books and pages can be therapeutic for many people. This quiet activity can be meditative and relaxing .
Popular today are "mandalas" - repetitive patterns and pictures that allow for creative expressio n while the person coloring them experiences a quiet, almost meditative frame of mind.
Another great benefit of coloring is that it helps reduce anxiety and stress. This activity, in the words of one researcher, can " help with a number of emotional and mental health issues. For many, boredom, lack of structure, and stress are the greatest triggers they have. This applies to individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorders, anxiety disorders, stress disorders, depressive disorders, eating and binge eating disorders, anger management issues, and substance abuse issues." (1) The repetition of coloring can provide focus, al lows the adult to tap into their creative side, and re-connect with their inner child.
Adult coloring books aren't too expensive. But anyone with internet access can search for "adult coloring images" and print off pages to color. (Click here for an owl mandala to color).
