* Erwin Danneels, associate professor of management, has co-authored an article titled "Normalizing vs. Analyzing: Drawing the Lessons from Failure to Enhance Firm Innovativeness" which soon will be published in the Journal of Business Venturing. While some popular theories suggest managers embrace failure, he finds that tolerance for failure does not promote innovation. Instead, firms need to make efforts to analyze past failures and make attempts to convert failure experiences into knowledge by extracting lessons learned. These efforts are effective only if the organization has a climate of what Danneels calls "constructive conflict," which enables an open and honest discussion. The paper was co-authored by Alex Vestal at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
