On September 17, the Woodward Avenue Action Association Board of Directors adopted a
Complete Streets Master Plan for the All American Road. The 27-mile plan is thought to be the longest Complete Streets Plan developed in the world.
The plan includes mass transit M-1 Rail and Bus Rapid Transit, a Parisian Boulevard design from Six Mile to the loop in Pontiac, changing the Pontiac Loop from one-way to two ways, protected two way cycle tracks at the sidewalk elevation from Grand Boulevard north with enhanced crosswalks and a number of protected mid-block crossings along the route of M-1 rail. The design changes to accommodate the dramatic change in Woodward's right-of-way which is as narrow as 100' - 120' from Grand Blvd. to Six Mile and as wide as 200' north of Six Mile.
The plan was over two years in the making. Five 3-day community charrette sessions were conducted, which included dozens of meetings, along with over 30 community meetings presenting draft recommendations. The plan was directed by a Steering Committee of representatives from all the communities and subject interests such as transit, cycling, seniors and people with disabilities.
All the communities along Woodward Avenue will be asked to endorse the plan in the next several months while several pilot projects are underway. Final documents are being updated to reflect changes made by the board. We will announce when the documents are posted on-line.
