This week’s topic: December Policy Updates

New Policy for Faculty

UConn is committed to fostering a supportive work environment where faculty can thrive in both their professional and personal lives. Periodically, a faculty member may need to modify some level of academic duties in order to respond to a personal life event.

The new Policy on Modified Duties for Faculty Due to Life Events (effective January 1, 2024) allows a faculty member to request a temporary modification of academic duties in order to respond to an anticipated or unanticipated personal life event or situation. Applicable to UConn Storrs and regional campuses.

Revised Policy for All Employees

Previously called "The Policy on Communication with External Media," the Policy on Media and Mass Communication aims to gather existing University policies into one accessible statement while reaffirming the University’s continuing commitment to the principles of academic freedom. Applicable to UConn Storrs and regional campuses including UConn Health.

Decommissioned Policy

The Policy on Alcohol and Other Drugs was decommissioned for several reasons.

To comply with the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA), UConn’s Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) prevention program must include standards of conduct that clearly prohibit the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees on its property or as part of any of its activities. Such standards of conduct already exist at UConn and UConn Health, and cover all University students and employees through the following:

General Rules of Conduct (All UConn employees - Storrs and regional campuses)

Responsibilities of Student Life: The Student Code (All UConn graduate and undergraduate students, including students in the School of Law)

Rules of Conduct (All UConn Health workforce)

UConn School of Dental Medicine Drug-Free Schools & Campuses Act and Drug-Free Workplace Act (All School of Dental Medicine students)

Academic Policies and Procedures (All School of Medicine students)
