Health and Safety Policy

UConn is committed to providing a safe and healthy learning and working environment. To that end, the University's Health and Safety Policy outlines responsibilities for compliance with relevant laws, regulations, policies and procedures regarding worker safety and public health.

PURPOSE

To ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, and to promote the well-being of all faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

APPLICABILITY

It applies to everyone at UConn, including faculty, staff, students, and researchers across all campuses.

POLICY STATEMENT

The health and safety of all faculty, staff, students and visitors shall be a principal consideration in the planning and conduct of all University activities and programs, and in the design, construction, modification, or renovation of all University buildings and facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

INDIVIDUALS

Follow all established health and safety rules and guidelines.


Perform all work in a safe and sensible way.


​Actively ensure the health and safety of self and all others at the University is a top priority.

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS (PI'S) AND UNIT MANAGERS

Ensure that work controls and procedures are consistent with relevant regulations and that University policies are implemented and followed.


Be responsive to safety complaints and incidents of non-compliance; work to prevent unsafe conditions.


Lead by example, demonstrating high standards for health and safety.

DEANS, DIRECTORS, AND DEPARTMENT HEADS

Ensure organizational compliance with regulations and University policies.


Take appropriate action to ensure all identified hazards are addressed and identified issues of non-compliance corrected in a timely manner.

THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (EHS)

Identify, assess and enforce the Health and Safety policy and implement all other University health and safety policies and procedures.


Maintain a comprehensive program that combines training, consultation, control, and inspection to protect the health and safety of all.
