The award-winning American composer Edward Smaldone is praised for his “beautiful lyric writing” (Cinemusical) and “exceptionally well-crafted” works (Pizzicato). His music has been performed by ensembles and soloists around the world, including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Brno Philharmonic, Munich Radio Orchestra, EOS Orchestra of Beijing, Memphis Symphony, Orchestra of the League of Composers, Composers Orchestra of Chicago, Peabody Camerata, and New York Virtuoso Singers, among many others.
Smaldone’s arrangements for dance have been performed worldwide by Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project and were featured at the 2022 New York Town Hall Twyla Tharp Celebration. Other dance collaborations include Jacobs Pillow, Hartford Ballet, and the dancer-choreographer Yin Mei. His music is featured on more than a dozen albums on the CRI, New World, New Focus, Capstone, Ablaze, Sera, and Naxos labels.
Smaldone was awarded the Goddard Lieberson Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was named “Composer of the Year” by the Classical Recording Foundation and a “Distinguished Alumnus” of the CUNY Graduate Center. Other awards are from ASCAP, the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, American Music Center.
He is Professor Emeritus of Music at the Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College, City University of New York, where he was on faculty from 1989 to 2024, also serving as Director of the School of Music (2002-2016). Smaldone earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Queens College and a Ph.D. from the CUNY Graduate Center. His music is published by American Composers Alliance (www.composers.com).
