Multi‑Departmental
• “Every single person I spoke to through the whole experience, from the first visit at the surgeon’s office to the after‑hours visit to do labs, X‑rays, and an EKG, including the gentleman cleaning the lobby floors and the ladies in scheduling and insurance, especially Ms. Cassidy, and the nurses in the OR, was absolutely polite, respectful, and helpful throughout the whole process. I feel like I got big city service with awesome small town community warmth.”
• “My entire experience from beginning to end was truly excellent. Every member from every department should be recognized for their efforts to make me and my wife feel safe, secure, and confident in their professional knowledge and expertise. Specifically, we would like to recognize the following staff and ask that you pass along our sincere ‘Thank You’: Pre‑op Nurse Amanda, OR Technician Leann, OR Nurses Chase and Laura, and PACU Nurse Sheri. Also most deserving of recognition are the Reception and Check‑In Staff on duty in the morning hours. God bless everyone.”
• “Excellent staff from receptionist, X‑ray, lab techs, to nurses and doctors.”
• “Everyone on the second floor, the MedSurg floor, Adrian, Sammy, Heidi, Daisy, Silvana, and Mike, were all wonderful with keeping up with my vitals and explaining what they were doing when they were in my room. I had Carlene and Kelly from PT come in and work with me. The dietary staff, Serenity and Desiree, were very nice when they brought my food in. The chaplain came in and she was very nice. I saw her again on my discharge day and we prayed together before I left. Also, Christina was very wonderful as well.”
Admissions
• “The clerk was very kind and compassionate. My check‑in was very quick.”
• “The staff was wonderful from check‑in to check‑out. They made me feel like a friend. It was a wonderful experience.”
Referrals
• “All the physicians at Connally Memorial are very professional and caring. Everyone I have dealt with is very knowledgeable, and referrals are completed within two hours. Who else can make that claim? Awesome.”
La Vernia Convenient Care / Clinics
• “This clinic and staff are always very good. They are usually able to get you in the same day and are always friendly and patient. The office is always clean and decorated cutely for the season. I would recommend them to everyone.”
• “This nurse is always very nice and professional. She makes my kids feel at ease when they have to be swabbed for testing. She is always patient.”
• “I have never been to an institution that was more professional and caring, and they always make sure to wash their hands.”
Medicare Advantage / Clinics
• “Dr. Snyder is excellent.”
• “She was very good.” (Kristina Hosek, NP)

Family Medicine / Clinics
• “I have been, and continue to be, very impressed with Dr. Caro and his staff. The time he spends with me during the examination and going over treatments, lab results, and more is appreciated. I also appreciate his staff contacting me about any concerns that lab work might show after I have left the office. Jen at Dr. Caro’s office has always gone above and beyond.”
Emergency Department
• “Absolutely loved the woman who signed me in. She was so friendly and caring.”
• “I used to work there as a housekeeper and a floor tech. I need to say, when I went in there, I could not believe how clean the ER was.”
• “I visited Connally Memorial after being sick for quite some time and going to multiple doctors to try to figure out what was the matter with no luck. Dr. Bose immediately recognized that I might have a mediport infection and was honest with me about the limits of testing and equipment available there. He transferred me to a nearby facility, where I ended up being hospitalized for about a week. The staff at the follow‑up hospital told me that if I had waited any additional time with the type of infection I had, I might not have survived. I am deeply grateful for the care, honesty, and guidance I received from Dr. Bose and the ER team.”
Surgery
• “Very impressed with the hospital and staff. I have had many surgeries in my life, and your facility is by far the best experience I have had. Thank you.”
• “This is an excellent hospital. I will be telling family and friends about this hospital.”
• “Amanda, Serenity, Chase, Laura, Nurse Tanya, and Dr. Hasan were excellent as always. They are professional and make you feel at ease, so I was comfortable with the procedure. Thank you, all.”
• “I was very pleased with Dr. Weitzel and all who were involved with my surgery.”
Ear, Nose, and Throat / Clinics
• “Everyone went out of their way for us.”
• “The whole office is extremely nice and very helpful. The doctor is amazing, and the staff is just as wonderful. They make you feel very welcome. I highly recommend them.”
• “If a place like this is needed, this is the place to go.”
Clinic System
• “Like I told the girl who called me yesterday to check up on me, I could not appreciate you all at Connally Memorial more than I already do.”
• “I call in on a monthly basis for medication refills. The staff promptly answers my calls, and I receive notification that the refill request has been sent to my pharmacy pretty quickly.”
• “The portal is very easy to use and navigate.”

• “I had a wonderful experience. All the staff I came in contact with were very professional, caring, and went over everything in detail with me.”
• “I definitely received five‑star care. My recovery was much easier because I had confidence in all my caregivers.”
• “Stellar care. I would recommend you to anyone.”

Tonya is known for her compassion, her dedication to patient care, and the meaningful relationships she builds with those she serves. Get to Know Tonya
Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare?
A. I have always been fascinated by the miracle of the human body. I chose Physical Therapy because I truly enjoy spending meaningful time with my patients, getting to know them, hearing their stories, and being part of their journey. After 21 years, I still love that part of my job.
Q. What are some of your proudest accomplishments in your career so far?
A. I am very proud to have mentored countless students as a clinical instructor. Teaching and watching students grow is incredibly rewarding. I am also proud to have developed specialties in vestibular and concussion rehabilitation, as well as sports and post operative rehabilitation.
Q. How do you stay motivated, or what keeps you passionate about what you do?
A. I have always viewed my career as a ministry. I feel blessed to have a profession where I can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. If I can help someone regain their quality of life or mobility, and hopefully show them God’s love in the process, that is what drives me. Forming relationships and seeing someone regain something they thought they had lost never gets old.
Q. What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?
A. My main hobby right now is being a sports mom. I love being active and spending time outdoors, including gardening, hiking, tennis, water activities, and traveling. Most of all, I enjoy spending time with the people I love.

Peer support is a flexible, ongoing program where trained peers provide emotional support, stress reduction, and guidance for personal and professional challenges. This includes issues such as burnout, grief, family problems, work-related stress, and mental health challenges. Peer support focuses on compassionate care, promoting wellness, resiliency, and problem-solving skills, and is typically delivered in-house by vetted peers who act as mentors or coaches. At CMMC, the peer support providers are Birdie Shawker, Jenn Group, and Mia Blunt. You can be connected to a peer at CMMC by texting Chaplain Birdie at 325-245-3037 or via STRAC at 210-233-5969.
Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is a structured, team-based intervention activated after a specific traumatic event, such as a line-of-duty death, mass casualty, or other critical incidents. CISM can also be provided after a particularly difficult patient encounter, for example, a pediatric code. It is conducted by trained and certified team members following protocols. CMMC has been served by the Alamo Area Response Team who provide CISM by invitation over a 14-county area. They have responded to many events such as the flooding in Kerrville, as well as events in Universal City, Karnes City, and here at CMMC. Alamo Area Response Team members include CMMC’s Birdie Shawker, Jenn Group, and Mia Blunt. If you think your team might benefit from such support, please reach out to Chaplain Birdie 325-245-3057 or STRAC at 210-233-5969.
An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a voluntary, work-based benefit that offers free, confidential support to employees (and often their eligible family members) for personal or work-related challenges. They offer confidential counseling and legal information, and financial guidance. It is designed to help individuals address issues before they escalate, improving personal well-being. At CMMC our EAP is facilitated via our Human Resources Department. Employees can reach out for support, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 888-628-4824.
| | A New Tool for Compassionate Care: Our Spiritual Care Communication Board | |
|
In the fast pace of hospital life, moments of spiritual need often arise quietly, sometimes without words at all. Chaplaincy and Nursing Services are pleased to introduce a new resource designed to support those moments with clarity and gentleness: the Spiritual Care Communication Board.
This simple, laminated bedside tool helps patients express spiritual or emotional needs when speaking is difficult, tiring, or impossible. It also supports nurses and chaplains in quickly identifying what kind of care a patient is seeking, ensuring no one’s inner life goes unnoticed.
The Board Offers Support With:
- Spiritual needs: Icons and phrases such as “I need prayer,” “I need quiet,” “I feel afraid,” or “I want a blessing.”
- Emotional check‑ins: Feelings like anxious, peaceful, lonely, hopeful, overwhelmed, or grieving.
- Cultural or religious preferences: Options for preferred rituals, sacred texts, or spiritual practices.
- Communication cues: “Please stay,” “Please step out,” “I want my family,” or “I need time alone.”
- End‑of‑life support: Gentle prompts for bedside presence.
The Spiritual Care Communication Board is designed for real‑world moments our hospital sees every day. It becomes a powerful tool in circumstances such as:
- Patients with limited speech: Stroke, intubation, respiratory distress, or neurological conditions that make verbal communication difficult.
- High‑anxiety situations: Trauma admissions, rapid changes in condition, or overwhelming emotional moments when words are hard to form.
- End‑of‑life care: When patients want to express spiritual needs, but fatigue or pain limits their ability to speak.
- Language barriers: When interpreters are delayed, the board offers immediate spiritual care clarity.
- Cognitive changes: Dementia, delirium, or confusion where simple visual prompts help patients communicate what matters most.
This tool is not meant to replace conversation, it is meant to open it. Nurses can use the board to identify needs early, and chaplains can follow up with deeper care. It ensures that spiritual distress is recognized as quickly as physical pain, and that every patient has a voice even when their own voice is quiet.
For more information, please reach out. Together, we can continue building a hospital culture where spiritual care is accessible, dignified, and woven into every patient’s healing journey.

Positive Thought
We face much adversity throughout our lives. Often, there is also much to celebrate. Cooperating with life affirms what is highest and best within us and in this world. We are not alone. We already belong to one another. Holding both hardships and celebrations tenderly, without grasping, is part of the path of spiritual growth and maturity.
As we adjust to the rhythms of fall, may you be blessed with all that you need to embrace new routines, challenges, and blessings with grace.
