Comprehensive Plan News

Haverford Township has received a great deal of community input on the updated DRAFT of the Comprehensive Plan, which was published for comments late last year.

The Township acknowledges that there are important areas of this Plan that need editing, refinement and, in some cases, correction.

As a result, the Public Hearing announced for February 3rd has been postponed indefinitely, and the Board of Commissioners will not consider the latest DRAFT for adoption.

In the meantime, the Township offers the following clarifications regarding this DRAFT:

  1. THERE IS NO INTENTION THAT DENSITY WOULD INCREASE IN THE RESIDENTIAL AREAS OF THE TOWNSHIP.
  2. WHILE THE PLAN DOES CALL FOR A MIXTURE OF RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT IN CERTAIN COMMERCIAL AREAS, THE DESIGNATION OF THESE MIXED-USE AREAS WAS INADVERTENTLY EXTENDED MUCH FURTHER THAN WAS INTENDED.

The process going forward will be as follows:

  1. The Public Hearing announced for February 3rd has been postponed indefinitely. A new date will be announced later.
  2. A community meeting will take place at the Township Building on January 29 at 6 PM. This will be an opportunity for Township staff to explain in further detail about the process. It will be an opportunity for residents to provide verbal feedback and to have a constructive conversation about how the community moves forward together.
  3. The Township will accept written comments on this DRAFT through February 15, 2025 at info@havtwp.com or at 1014 Darby Road.
  4. Subsequently, the Township will incorporate all the feedback - written and verbal - into the next version of the Comprehensive Plan.
  5. Once the next version is published, the Township will again ask for feedback from the community through our website, social media pages and constant contact emails. This process might take a little time, but the end goal is a plan that the entire Township can feel proud of.

Once the Board of Commissioners is comfortable with the Plan, they will conduct a Public Hearing and consider adoption. The Comprehensive Plan serves as a policy document that outlines the vision, goals, objectives, and strategies for the next 10 years, guiding decisions related to land use, development, and community well-being. The last complete update to the Comprehensive Plan was completed 35-years ago.

A great deal of good work has gone into the updated Comprehensive Plan. The Township appreciates the hard work of those who have worked on this plan. Likewise, the Township is grateful for the trust, patience, and input from the community. Together, we’re building a roadmap for the future, and we’re grateful to have you on this journey with us.
